The seventh generation Volkswagen Transporter - based on the dominant Ford Transit Custom - will be priced from £30,995 plus VAT when it arrives in the UK next year, undercutting its Ford rival.
Fully electric models will start at £41,965 but will be eligible for the UK government’s plug-in van grant, currently reducing the price tag by £5,000.
Three diesel options will be available when order books open in early 2025, all driven by a 2.0-litre engine with power outputs starting at 110hp. A pair of battery-powered options will also be on offer, with power of 136hp available from the entry-level models. A plug-in hybrid model will join the range in 2026.
As well as the regular panel van, the new Volkswagen Transporter will also be offered in Kombi (double-cab in van), Shuttle (minibus), and double-cab chassis vans. Short- and long-wheelbase variants will also be available.
The new Transporter benefits from the Ford Transit Custom’s impressive payload abilities, with a maximum limit of 1.33 tonnes, depending on trim - an increase of 130kg over the outgoing model. The cargo volume grows by 10%, up to 5.8m3 on the long wheelbase vans. Towing limits will reach as far as 2.8 tonnes.
The cab has been thoroughly redesigned, combining high-tech digital screens with physical buttons and dials for durability and ease of use. Every model gets a 13-inch infotainment display alongside a 12-inch digital instrument panel and USB-C and USB-A ports. Electric models can be fitted with up to three 230V plug sockets, along with a 12V outlet at the rear of the cargo area.
Safety systems such as Lane Assist, Dynamic Road Sign Display, and a wrong-way driver warning system are also included as standard across the range.
Buyers will be given the choice of three trim levels, starting with the entry-level Commerce spec. This includes LED headlights, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, heated door mirrors, cruise control and rear parking sensors.
Commerce Plus adds body-coloured bumpers, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and an anti-theft alarm system.
At the top of the range, the Commerce Pro trim offers alloy wheels, electric mirrors, adaptive cruise control, heated seats, air conditioning, a wireless charging pad, and super bright LED lighting for the load bay.
