While the all-electric Volkswagen ID Buzz is winning fans with its retro-yet-somehow-futuristic design, the head of Volkswagen Group Design, Klaus Zyciora, has asked his Instagram followers: “Shall we bring it to the next level?”
Celebrating World Design Day, Zyciora took to Instagram to share a rendering of a possible future for the ID Buzz; an extended pickup truck.
Zyciora’s vision takes the existing ID Buzz van and lengthens the wheelbase from the rear doors before adding a pickup load bed. The front of the vehicle remains very similar to the forthcoming van, but the sliding side door to the rear seats has been swapped out for a standard hinged option so that it doesn’t encroach on the cargo area.
Gaining a load bed means losing the third row of seats (the ID Buzz will be available as a five or seven-seater) but will add versatility. What better way to arrive at the beach with surfboards stacked in the back?
As well as a lifestyle-friendly passenger version of the ID Buzz, Volkswagen will introduce a commercial version in the coming months. A strict two-seater, the ID Buzz van will provide a 3,900 litre, 650kg payload capacity, with doors that open wide enough to accommodate a pair of euro pallets.
Customers will be able to lease an ID Buzz Cargo with a 77kWh battery pack paired with a 201hp electric motor that drives the rear wheels. You can find out more about how this translates by reading our guide on what kW and kWh really mean.
Official range and economy figures haven’t been released yet, but the same powertrain drives the Volkswagen ID 4 family SUV for 317 miles. It's definitely an EV to put range anxiety at ease, and you can see a similar range from some of our top 10 longest range EVs.
The van will have rapid chagrin capability, at rates of up to 170kW, which means the ID Buzz can be topped up from 5% battery level to 80% in as little as 30 minutes. Want to get the most out of charging? Take a look at our guide, specialised in helping you pick your ideal charger.
