Hyundai and Iveco have moved a step closer to achieving their sustainability goals as they reveal the hydrogen-powered eDaily fuel cell electric vehicle.
By leveraging their collaboration, Hyundai and Iveco have accelerated their transition towards net zero carbon. Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2022, multiple joint working groups have been formed on various technological streams to explore ways they can complement each other in developing electric vehicles and alternative propulsion.
Previously the collaboration announced hydrogen-powered Iveco Bus vehicles, which are equipped with Hyundai’s fuel cell system, which will create positive advantages in terms of performance and emissions. The eDaily Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) showcases the future potential of Iveco’s best-selling large van, alongside a range that currently includes traditional and methane/bio-methane propulsions and new battery-electric models.
The eDaily FCEV prototype is fitted with Hyundai’s 90kW hydrogen fuel cell system and a 190hp electric motor. Six tanks offer 12kg of hydrogen storage, which is enough fuel to give the 7.2-tonne GVW vehicle a driving range of more than 215 miles. With no need to recharge a battery pack, refilling the tanks with hydrogen takes just 15 minutes. If you want to know more about charging, take a read through our guide on EV charging.
While the Iveco eDaily BEV is best suited for short journeys, eDaily FCEV will be an ideal option for longer deliveries where high payload and long range are required.
The fuel cell system provided by Hyundai is the latest step in the company’s 20+ year hydrogen journey. In conjunction with the battery pack by Iveco’s powertrain group FPT Industrial, this powers the eDaily FCEV.
Hyundai’s advanced fuel cell technology is already in use in various applications and has logged over 2.8 million miles in Switzerland on heavy-duty trucks, showing its powerful performance and reliability. The slogan “Engineered by Iveco Group, powered by Hyundai” reflects this mutually beneficial cooperation and will also be the driver for similar future initiatives.
Martin Zeilinger, head of commercial vehicle development tech unit, Hyundai:
“Following the recent announcement that Iveco Bus will equip its future hydrogen-powered buses with our fuel cells, the hydrogen-powered eDaily is another concrete example of what we can accomplish by working together in accelerating the transition to carbon neutrality. The partnership formed between the two companies has proven to be very successful and we expect greater results in the coming years.”
Marco Liccardo, chief technology and digital officer, Iveco:
“On the day we are announcing that our battery-electric eDaily project has come true, we are thrilled to present the first hydrogen-powered eDaily to the world. Based on this prototype, we aim to roll out a small series of FCEV vans for trial with selected customers by the end of next year. This exciting milestone in our sustainability journey is an outcome of the successful collaboration between Iveco Group and Hyundai Motor Company and shows how we can achieve tangible results in a short timeframe by combining our strengths.”
With the ongoing success of the projects and the expectation of them yielding results very soon, Hyundai and Iveco are examining other collaboration options, ranging from cross-selling products in selected regions to joint vehicle automation and connectivity.
Hyundai is also considering a further collaboration with FPT Industrial as it looks for sourcing opportunities for next-generation conventional powertrains.
