ABT e-Line has partnered with Volkswagen to extend the range of the ID Buzz on a single charge by integrating specially fitted solar roof modules.
Previous Volkswagen models required more roof space for the complex solar array, making module development too costly. However, the ID Buzz — particularly in its long-wheelbase form — provides a larger blank canvas for accommodating the panels.
In Kempten, Germany, ABT's engineers have successfully fed up to 600 watts of peak power into the ID Buzz's high-voltage battery using the solar modules designed for the roof space.
This achievement has opened up the possibility of incorporating additional modules on the side panels of the van, potentially increasing the total output to over 1,000 watts.
The panels will harness solar energy both when the van is stationary and in motion, potentially providing an additional 150 miles of range per month, totalling up to 1,800 miles per year.
In addition to increasing the range, the ID Buzz can also utilise the energy to power other components, such as a refrigerated van body, further enhancing the vehicle's versatility.
Production of the new solar roof is expected to begin in early 2024, and as it has done with the ABT Camper XNH, Volkswagen Group Service will carry out the conversion close to the factory, saving long logistics routes in the interests of greater sustainability.
