Volkswagen launches £29k plug-in Caddy Cargo eHybrid

  • New VW Caddy eHybrid revealed
  • Plug-in hybrid powertrain for first time
  • Gets 73-mile max electric range
  • Priced from £28,435

Volkswagen has expanded its plug-in hybrid range with the launch of the new Caddy Cargo eHybrid, bringing electric power to its popular compact van for the first time.

The Caddy Cargo eHybrid pairs a 115hp 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 150hp and 350Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

A 19.7kWh battery enables an electric-only WLTP range of up to 73 miles — far more than most plug-in hybrids and more than enough to cover the average daily mileage for most van drivers. That makes the Caddy eHybrid particularly well suited to urban users and those operating in low-emission zones.

Charging options include home-based AC charging at up to 11kW and public DC rapid charging at up to 50kW — a rarity for a plug-in hybrid. That means it can add around 30 miles of electric range in just 10 minutes, making it easy to top up while grabbing lunch or between jobs.

Despite its compact footprint, the Caddy Cargo eHybrid offers a maximum load length of 2,150mm and a load volume of up to 3.7m³ — the same as its diesel-powered counterpart. Payloads vary depending on the model, with the SWB Commerce Plus version capable of carrying up to 740kg. Some variants drop as low as 635kg, so it's worth double-checking spec sheets to ensure the chosen model meets operational needs.

Buyers can choose from three trim levels: Commerce, Commerce Plus, and Commerce Pro. The entry-level Commerce model includes a 10.4-inch infotainment system, a digital driver instrument panel, Bluetooth connectivity, and cruise control. Commerce Plus adds extras such as storage compartments under the seats, improved seating comfort, and App-Connect functionality, while Commerce Pro trim includes a navigation system, heated seats, wireless App-Connect, and front and rear parking sensors.

Prices for the Caddy Cargo eHybrid start from £28,435 plus VAT for the SWB Commerce model, rising to £33,090 plus VAT for the long-wheelbase Maxi in top-spec Commerce Pro trim.

Order books are open now, with first deliveries expected in early summer.

Excellent experience. Leasing consultant Jason Hastings was point of contact and simplified the process by being contactable, helpful and friendly. The personal connection sealed the deal.
