Volkswagen has added another Caddy to its light commercial vehicle line-up in the form of the Caddy Cargo eHybrid. This plug-in hybrid variant (PHEV) of the Caddy will offer drivers an electric-only range of up to 75 miles.
The Caddy eHybrid will see the 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine, which produces 115hp, joined by an electric motor, giving the vehicle a combined 150hp and 350Nm of torque. A six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox will direct the power to the front wheels.
The average van only covers around 50 miles per day, so the official WLTP economy figures that suggest the 19.7kWh battery will provide up to 75 miles of range makes the Caddy eHybrid well-suited for most needs, particularly in urban areas where the requirement for zero-emission vehicles is rising.
The battery in the Caddy eHybrid can be charged at home overnight with an AC wall box at up to 11kW. If an on-the-go top-up is required, the van can accept up to 50kW from a DC rapid charger — an unusually fast charge speed for a plug-in hybrid vehicle. A quick 10-minute lunch stop at a rapid charger should be enough to add another 30 miles or so to the range.
Alongside the eHybrid, buyers will still have the option to stick to traditional oil-fuelled models, with the 1.5-litre petrol (TSI) and the 2.0-litre diesel (TDI) engines continuing to be available.
The new Caddy comes complete with several improvements to both safety equipment and convenience. There’s a new digital instrument cluster, cruise control, parking sensors, and a voice assistant that incorporates ChatGPT. Advanced driver assistance such as automatic emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian monitoring and lane keeping assist are now included, and additional airbags and a multifunctional steering wheel are fitted as standard.
These changes to the safety tech mean that the Caddy has been awarded a Platinum rating by Euro NCAP in the latest round of Commercial Van Ratings, highlighting just how effective the safety system improvements have proven to be in real-world conditions.
Pricing for the Caddy Cargo eHybrid has yet to be announced for UK customers. In Germany, before taxes, prices for the standard wheelbase version start at €36,985 (£31,600), rising to €39,055 (£33,400) for the long-wheelbase Maxi version.
