Toyota unveils large Proace Max van with diesel or electric power

  • New Proace Max is largest van in Toyota line-up
  • Available to lease with diesel or electric power
  • Load capacity of up to 17m3
  • Proace Max Electric gets range of up to 260 miles between charges

More than two years after its initial announcement, Toyota has launched its new Proace Max van, marking its debut in the heavy-duty van market.

The Proace Max completes the Toyota Professional line-up of light commercial vehicles, including options in the compact, medium, and large van categories and pick-ups with the Hilux.

Toyota’s entire van range, including the new Proace Max, offers both battery electric and diesel powertrains. The Proace Max Electric has a 110kWh lithium-ion battery, driving a 270hp motor that produces 410Nm of torque. According to official WLTP testing figures, it can deliver up to 260 miles of range on a single charge. Large vans typically cover fewer than 60 miles per day (according to data from rivals at Ford), so this range should be sufficient for several days of urban deliveries.

The battery can be recharged at up to 150kW, allowing it to go from empty to 80% in just 55 minutes. All versions also come with an 11kWh AC onboard charger suitable for business or home charging — a typical 7kW home charger can provide around a 90% charge overnight.

Proace Max diesel models have a 2.2-litre engine under the bonnet that produces 140hp, paired with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission, delivering maximum torque of 350Nm and 280Nm, respectively.

Diesel variants have a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tonnes, while electric models extend to 4.25 tonnes.

While payloads haven’t been confirmed, the Proace Max range offers four different length and height configurations, with load capacities ranging from 11.5 to 17 cubic meters.

There’s less choice with trim levels, as the Proace Max will be offered in just one specification called Icon, which is the entry-level across the broader Toyota range. This trim includes a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with integrated navigation, a digital instrument cluster, climate control, automatic headlights with high beam assist, a reversing camera, and rear parking sensors.

All Proace Max panel vans come ply-lined in the back as standard, though this feature can be removed upon request, reducing the vehicle’s on-the-road price.

Dealers are now accepting orders for the new Proace Max, with the first customer deliveries expected in September.

The panel van range starts at £36,358 plus VAT for a diesel-powered L2H2 model with a manual gearbox. Opting for an automatic gearbox increases the price by £2,296. Electric models begin at £51,979 for an L3H2 model, with the price rising to £53,604 for the larger L4H3 variant. All electric models should be eligible for the government’s plug-in van grant that currently reduces the price by £5,000.

Chassis cab, dropside, platform cab, and tipper models will also be available.
