Renault unveils Master Sound Truck mobile music studio!

It’s true to say that no matter what your profession, there’s a vehicle out there for you — something that Renault has proven with the Renault Master Sound Truck - a mobile recording studio designed for aspiring young rappers.

The one-off vehicle has been created as part of Renault's corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative called 'Give Me 5', which focuses on helping young people from priority neighbourhoods

Renault, working with Paris-based sound specialists Red House for acoustics, and PROCAR for bodywork, designed the Sound Truck to allow five up-and-coming musicians to record in professional conditions — all in the back of a customised commercial vehicle.

The conversion wasn’t without its challenges.

Annejela Royoux, image and sponsoring partnerships manager within Renault’s marketing department, said: "We had lots of requirements relating to the construction of the vehicle as it would be touring around the country. It needed to house a professional recording studio, weigh less than 3.5 tonnes so it could be driven with a standard category B licence, be built using eco-responsible materials and, above all else, align with the brand’s DNA.”

Weight was a particularly challenging aspect for the project team, as the exacting soundproofing and acoustic requirements had to be balanced carefully against both size and weight limits.

Lucas Medus, founder and artistic director of Red House, added: "Weight was monitored throughout the project, including during the soundproofing and sound treatment processes and for the finishing touches and furniture. We planned everything right down to the last screw to avoid adding three grams too many.”

How to use the relatively small amount of space available — the Master has a cargo volume of nine cubic metres — became a major consideration.

The space was divided into two areas: a control room with the sound engineer and computers and a separate space for the singer. “My role involved making a recording studio fit into a van – an enclosed and limited space that doesn’t offer the same freedom as other spaces,” added Medus.

The sound truck met the specifications given by Give Me 5 sponsor and prominent rap figure, Youssoupha, and his team, who wanted a practical and easy-to-use space. The deep blue exterior and the mix of light wood interior with dark fabrics further enhanced the vehicle's appeal, creating a distinctive style and creative ambience.

Youssoupha's reaction on seeing the finished product summed it up: “I think Renault’s got a magic touch!”
