Peugeot has agreed to provide Royal Mail with 2,100 new electric vans, helping the postal service deliver on its environmental goals.
The latest delivery will boost the firm’s green fleet with 1,100 E-Partner models built at Stellantis’ Ellesmere Port plant, bolstering the mail company’s commitment to sustainability as it heads into the Christmas rush.
These new electric vans will also be the first in Royal Mail’s fleet to display the royal cypher of King Charles III.
Peugeot and Royal Mail have collaborated since 2009, with Peugeot introducing electric vans into Royal Mail’s line-up in 2014. The current rollout supports Royal Mail’s broader environmental goals, including a target of net-zero emissions by 2040. The upgraded fleet of electric vans is expected to slash CO₂ emissions by an estimated 6,000 tonnes annually.
Royal Mail is rolling out a sustainable charging infrastructure to support the new fleet at its delivery offices, where the vans will recharge using 100% renewable electricity. The aim is to have over half of these new electric vans on the road before peak holiday operations kick in.
In addition to electrifying its smaller vehicles, Royal Mail has started using hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as an alternative fuel for its heavy trucks. This alternative fuel reduces carbon emissions by up to 90% compared to regular diesel-powered units, with the change to HVO already saving over 30,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Peugeot currently tos the UK’s sales charts for electric vans. The manufacturer offers a range of 12 fully electric vehicles, three of which are light commercial vehicles — the E-Partner, E-Expert and E-Boxer. While UK demand for electric vans remains low, sales are increasing across Europe, with Peugeot ramping up production at Ellesmere Port to meet demand.
Eurig Druce, group managing director, Peugeot UK: “Peugeot is proud to continue supplying electric vans to Royal Mail, a partnership that has been ongoing since 2009, which is testament to the quality and reliability of our vehicles. Peugeot’s electric vans are built in Britain for an iconic British brand and we will continue to uphold this historic partnership and support Royal Mail’s electrification ambitions. Peugeot is equally committed to the electric transition, with the widest all-electric vehicle line-up of any mainstream European brand, while our leadership in electric van sales is proof of our technology and innovation in this market.”
Greg Sage, deputy director for corporate affairs and ESG, Royal Mail: “We’re proud that our latest tranche of electric vehicles has been produced at Peugeot’s Ellesmere Port plant. This is an important part of our work to expand the UK’s largest electric delivery fleet and to remain the UK’s greenest delivery company.”
