Medical Detection Dogs, Volkswagen’s charity partner for the year, has received a new all-electric ID. Buzz Cargo van donated by the manufacturer.
The addition to the charity’s fleet will be used to transport its highly-trained dogs to locations such as training facilities, vet appointments, and home visits. The vehicle also marks the charity’s first electric model, supporting its commitment to more sustainable operations.
The ID. Buzz Cargo, with a 3.9m³ load capacity, has been adapted to feature two custom-built crates to transport the special dogs safely. The vehicle also has enough room to take the charity’s training gear, ensuring no ruff ride for the dogs or damaged equipment.
Based in Milton Keynes, Medical Detection Dogs carries out ground-breaking work by training dogs to detect the unique scent of human diseases. These remarkable animals are taught to recognise the odours of illnesses like cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and bacterial infections. The charity also prepares Medical Alert Assistance Dogs, which can detect subtle scent changes in their owners, helping people with conditions such as diabetes, severe allergies, or Addison’s disease to avoid potentially life-threatening situations.
Over 200 people have already benefited from the assistance of these pawsome pooches, which are truly life-changing. The charity’s mission is to enhance the speed and precision of medical diagnoses through the keen noses of their canine companions, something that the donation from Volkswagen will help continue.
Charlotte Richardson, Corporate Partnerships Manager at Medical Detection Dogs: “Finding suitable support vehicles for our trainers to safely and comfortably transport our life-saving dogs can be a challenge, and the space and safety features provided by the ID. Buzz Cargo will make the operational side of our training much easier. This will also be our first all-electric vehicle, supporting our trainers to carry out their important work, so the excellent range makes the transition to electric easy.”
Eve Tyers, Head of Marketing, PR and Communications at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles: “We’re thrilled to be supporting Medical Detection Dogs, and the delivery of an ID. Buzz Cargo as a support vehicle will help continue the charity’s life-saving training work and the Volkswagen Group’s long-running support of local charities.”
