- Government extends the Plug-in Van Grant
- Will run for at least another year
- Part of broader £120m funding package
- Get up to £2,500 off cost of eLCV
There’s good news for businesses considering electric vans, as government support isn’t going away just yet.
The Plug-in Van Grant will run for another year as part of a broader funding package, totalling £120 million, aiming to make electric vans more accessible and affordable to businesses in the UK.
Businesses using the Plug-in Van Grant to help transition to zero-emission vehicles will receive up to £2,500 off the cost of eLCVs weighing up to 2.5 tonnes and up to £5,000 off larger electric vans weighing up to 4.25 tonnes. The government scheme has supported over 80,000 electric and zero-emissions vans since it was introduced, and it is still an important part of the government’s plan to reduce emissions from transport.
The government has, as well as extending the funding scheme, scrapped the need for drivers of heavier eLCVs to complete a five-hour training course. Previously, drivers of heavier electric vans (between 3.5 and 4.25 tonnes) needed to complete a five-hour training course to allow them to be driven on a standard Category B (car) licence. That rule is now permanently scrapped, meaning businesses can put drivers behind the wheel of electric vans more easily.
The extension of the government Plug-in Van Grant scheme provides businesses considering investing in zero-emissions commercial vehicles with a further year of certainty amid continued discussions on the date of the future phase-out of petrol and diesel vehicles. As the charging network continues to grow and the running costs of electric vehicles remain lower than ICE alternatives, the switch to electric for businesses is becoming more viable.
The continued financial support for businesses and fleet operators from the government’s renewed commitment will help the continued momentum in the UK to move transport towards a lower-emission future, with similar grants also being extended to zero-emission motorcycles and taxis.
Lilian Greenwood, Minister for Future of Roads: “From van drivers and businesses, to drivers with accessibility needs, bikers and cabbies, today we are making it easier, faster and cheaper for people to switch to electric vehicles. By making the transition to zero emissions a success, we’re helping to drive growth all over the UK, putting more money in people’s pockets and rebuilding Britain to deliver our Plan for Change.”
