Euro NCAP awards Platinum to seven vans in safety leap

The latest safety ratings from Euro NCAP show that advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in commercial vans have seen significant improvements, with seven of the vehicles tested receiving a coveted Platinum award.

New rules for safety came into effect on 1 July 2024, and 40% of the vans tested performed substantially better than the minimum requirements set out by the EU General Safety Regulation (GSR2), which focuses on ADAS technology.

The Ford Transit Courier and Ford Transit Connect were among the top-rated vans, as were the Mercedes-Benz Vito, Maxus eDeliver 5, Renault Master, Volkswagen Caddy Cargo and Nissan Interstar.

The incorporation of the advanced technologies found in the manufacturers' passenger vehicles meant that the Vito and Transit Courier scored particularly well in testing. Euro NCAP has consistently advocated for the equal availability and performance of ADAS technologies in passenger cars and LCVs — and with good reason, judging by the scores.

Of the remaining 11 vans tested by Euro NCAP, 10 achieved a Gold award, with just the LEVC VN5 falling short with a silver award.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general at Euro NCAP:
“We have seen a significant improvement in the availability of ADAS as manufacturers comply with new legislation. Our Commercial Van ratings though are designed to drive the effectiveness and performance beyond what is required by GSR2. It is pleasing that vehicle manufacturers are responding to Euro NCAP’s tougher requirements and surpassing GSR2 standards, and we would urge fleet managers to consider Commercial Vans that have the Euro NCAP Platinum rating. These are the vehicles which most significantly outperform GSR2 regulations and offer commercial fleets safer choices that prevent or mitigate the severity of crashes and protect company reputation and their drivers.”

Euro NCAP has tested commercial vans in its assessment program since December 2020. The testing protocols were updated in 2023 and will be updated again in 2026. From that date onwards, only technologies available as standard will be tested to encourage the further adoption of ADAS technologies.
