After design sketches were unveiled last week, here’s the first proper peek at the incoming Volkswagen ID. Aero - the firm’s first fully-electric sedan.
The eye-catching Aero will be the sixth member of VW’s ‘ID’ family when it launches next year, joining the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.6 and the ID. Buzz.
And after teasing us with some initial glimpses of the Aero a few days ago, VW has now revealed much more detailed pics.
We also now know the ID. Aero will get a 77 kWh battery and a range of up to 385 miles between charges, largely because of some clever aerodynamics that VW has employed.
The German manufacturer says the ID. Aero will be ‘suitable for long distances’ while also offering an ‘extraordinary amount of space and a premium interior’.
The ID. Aero will be pitched squarely against the Tesla Model 3, as well as the BMW i4, and VW is confident it can thrive in the prestige market.
Talking about the way the ID. Aero looks, a VW spokesperson says:
“The aerodynamically designed front end and roof ensure that air flows optimally over the vehicle. The air flow is calmed by the slightly drawn-in rear end with a separation edge. The sporty 22-inch two-tone wheels are designed in the style of a turbine and are integrated flush into the wheel housings.
“Classic door handles are replaced by illuminated touch surfaces, which reduce the drag even further. At the top of the silhouette, the bold tornado line and downward sloping roof line shape the design. The powerful shoulder section of the ID. Aero is located above the tornado line. The contour lines make the electric sedan appear flatter and give it a dynamic look.”
A narrow light strip also features prominently at the front and sides, as do LED Matrix headlights.
While the first ID. Aeros will hit the road in China - a key market for VW - the European versions will follow soon after and will be built in Emden, Germany, in 2023.
