The world's largest automaker Volkswagen is set to spread it's wings further, as it dips it's toes into the SUV market with a vehicle touted as the closest rival to the market-leading Nissan Juke and Honda HR-V. If there is a manufacturer to be feared, it is Volkswagen, the German multi-national brand have a monopoly of the industry and continue to churn out fanstically refined vehicles. That is a trend that they will hope to continue as they confirm they have set their sights on the SUV market. These bullish intentions are particularly significant as they hope to model this vehicle on the popular Polo.
The VW Polo, along with the Golf stands-out as one of the most prosperous vehicles off the Volkswagen conveyor belt in the last thrity years. And that's not forgetting the incredibly legacy that started with the VW Beetle - a vehicle still going strong today. Volkswagen has time, and reputation on their side and are frequently referenced as one of the most trustworthy manufacturers on the market. That will immeadeatly act as a springboard into any fresh market, and their latest foray is expected to pan out much the same.
It's fair to say rumours had been brewing about Volkswagen working on a new SUV, and the Polo model seemed like a natural fit. In an exclusive interview with Auto Express, it was confirmed the new SUV will be daintier than the Tiguan and Touareg and based on the MQB Architecture which is believed to be forming the basis of many of Volkswagen's other models. Dr Heinz-Jakob Neuser, VW's board member for technical development stated: ''In the future we will have minimum of one SUV in each segment - from the top-line SUV (Touareg) to MQB-based models and a number of derivatives including Golf SUV and Polo SUV. Core markets for the Polo SYV will be China, South America and Europe''
So there you have it, Golf's two prodigal sons will be gracing the SUV stage very shortly. We haven't seen any official pictures or specs of this vehicle, the initial blueprints are safely in Volkswagen's hands but it's likely the vehicle will feature similarly to that of the T-ROC Concept Car that was on show in Geneva back in 2014, and the Taigun sub-compact. It's fair to say these forecasted models are a long way off, but Volkswagen have already whipped up enough excitement over their upcoming vehicles to convince them this is a worthwile investment. We wait with bated breath.
