Here it is, Volkswagen’s most powerful GTI model - the new Golf GTI Clubsport - unveiled in full.
We got a glimpse of VW’s updated hot hatch last week when we saw it in disguised form.
But now the covers are well and truly off, and the Clubsport got its world premiere while hurtling around Germany’s Nürburgring racetrack - which is a fitting (if damp, by the looks of it) introduction indeed.
It could also be one of the last petrol-engine Golf GTI’s ever, with a ninth-generation Golf set to become fully-electric when it’s launched around 2028.
The GTI Clubsport will have power of 300 PS and 400 Nm of torque, which trumps the regular 265 PS Golf GTI and is only narrowly off the range-topping 320 PS Golf R.
Acceleration from 0-62 mph goes by in 5.6 seconds for the Clubsport - its 6.0 seconds for the standard Golf GTI - while top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. You can, however, raise that top speed to 166 mph if you go for the optional ‘Race’ package.
The newest Clubsport also gets sharper exterior design and an enhanced interior compared with the old model, while lease customers will also enjoy a high-end sports suspension system.
There’s an illuminated VW badge at the front, revamped LED lights, and a large rear spoiler for maximum downforce. Lightweight 19-inch alloys with a five oval semi-circle design are also new.
VW’s DCC adaptive chassis control is available as an option - and it’ll be a tempting one.
The uprated cabin now boasts a new leather sports steering wheel as well as a fresh infotainment system with voice assistant and artificial intelligence ChatGPT integration.
A Volkswagen spokesperson tells us: “The new Golf GTI Clubsport was unveiled on the Ring Boulevard at the legendary race track in the Eifel region in front of an enthusiastic crowd of motorsport fans. They were the first to get a look at the new enhanced model which, with its completely redesigned front end, now looks even more powerful and distinctive.”
