Here it is, the all-new, all-electric Vauxhall Astra.
It’s due to arrive in 2023 and will have a range of up to 258 miles between charges, courtesy of a 54kWh battery.
And, as is par for the course with an Astra, it can also be leased as either a traditional hatchback or ‘Sports Tourer’ estate.
It’s been a busy week for the Astra - a car that’s four decades old and which is assembled in sunny Cheshire.
The traditionally-fuelled Astra, which can also be had as a frugal plug-in hybrid, scooped the ‘Best Family Hatch of the Year’ trophy at 2022 TopGear.com Awards and was singled-out for praise when it comes to cost, emissions and space.
Incidentally, other big winners at the TopGear.com Awards were the Honda Civic Type R, which took home both the ‘Car of the Year’ and ‘Hot Hatch of the Year’ gongs, as well as the uber-affordable Dacia Jogger, which was handed the Readers’ Choice prize.
And now the Astra is sure to be amongst the awards again next year, thanks to the introduction of this fuel-saving Electric version.
So what can lease customers expect?
Well, the styling is similar to the standard Astra, so you get that razor-sharp ‘Vizor’ front end while eye-catching 18 inch alloys are standard, and can be had in black.
At the heart of both the hatchback and the Sports Tourer is a 54kWh battery which provides power of 156 hp and 270 Nm of torque. You can also expect a top speed of 105 mph.
How does that stack up against rivals?
Well, the Astra Electric’s biggest rival will be the incoming Peugeot e-308, which has a range of up to 248 miles. The Renault Megane E-Tech, meanwhile, has more power and a range of up to 280 miles.
As with the rest of the fully electric Vauxhall range, the new Astra Electric supports up to 100kW DC rapid charging, with an 80 per cent charge taking just 30 minutes to complete.
From launch, all Astra Electric models will come standard with a three-phase 11kW AC onboard charger, suitable for wallbox use at home. After some more info on EV charging? We've got a guide that will talk you through the process of charging an electric car.
The Astra Electric should be plenty practical, too. The Sports Tourer gets 516 litres of boot space, which increases to 1,553 litres with the rear seats folded flat.
The cabin features a 10 inch digital cluster and a separate 10 inch infotainment screen, while a head-up display is also up for grabs.
The Astra Electric also boasts safety tech including front collision warning with automatic emergency braking, active lane keeping assist, drowsiness detection and rear cross alert.
Order books will open early in 2023, when the pricing and precise spec will also be revealed. So watch this space.
