- BMW announces facelift forv2 Series Gran Coupe
- Slightly longer and taller than outgoing model
- Improved suspension for more agile handling
- Performance M235 xDrive gets 300 hp
This is the updated new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, arriving with a bigger body, overhauled interior and improved suspension.
The Gran Coupe sits in BMW’s 2 Series stable alongside the two-door 2 Series Coupe and MPV-style 2 Series Active Tourer. It’s the 2 Series you need if you value both interior space and sleek coupe styling.
Compared to the outgoing model, the new BMW 2 Series Coupe has grown in size, being slightly longer and taller than its predecessor, which means more room inside for passengers and luggage.
There’s also a bold new look, with overhauled lights, a fresh new front grille and redesigned lower section that BMW says gives the 2 Series Coupe ‘a particularly extrovert appearance’.
The cockpit has been freshened-up and now gets twin 10-25-inch screens oriented towards the driver while the ‘QuickSelect’ tech allows direct access to functions without switching to a submenu.
It’s not just the infotainment system that’s sharper - so is the handling.
BMW says they’ve enhanced the rigidity of the body structure and chassis connection while new shock absorber technology improves the ride comfort by reducing rolling movements when cornering.
As before, adaptive M suspension comes as standard.
There are now just two BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe models to choose from - the base ‘220 M Sport’ or the performance ‘M235 xDrive’ (pictured throughout here).
The 220 M Sport model is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine that’s supported by mild-hybrid tech. You get 170 hp and the ability to accelerate from 0-62 mph in a sprightly 7.9 seconds.
Perhaps more importantly as a selling point for this particular variant, it’ll also return up to 53 miles to the gallon, which is an improvement on the old car.
The BMW M235 xDrive Gran Coupe is a different beast entirely and a vehicle that will encourage you to test that new suspension set up.
The exterior features an M radiator grille with horizontal bars, a front apron, aggressive side sills, a rear diffuser and rear spoiler, and M quad exhaust tailpipes.
Here a 2.0-litre mill provides 300 hp (slightly down on the outgoing M235), 400 Nm of torque, and the oomph to get you up to 62 mph from a standstill in 4.9 seconds. BMW’s ‘xDrive’ all-wheel drive system comes as standard with the M235.
Because this is a sporty school-run vehicle, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe comes as standard with automated parking and a reversing camera. Meanwhile you can also expect a full suite of driver assistance and safety systems, like advanced front-collision warning, cruise control with braking function, and emergency steering intervention.
Prices start from £34,915 to purchase outright.
Leasing rivals to the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe include the Audi A3 Saloon and Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupe.
