How do you make one of the UK’s most practical cars even easier to live with? Turn it into an SUV crossover, that’s how.
The new Corolla Cross is, then, an SUV-ified version of the regular Corolla hatchback, the latter of which is nothing less than one of the world’s best selling cars.
And with a more commanding view of the road, great looks and a fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain, the Corolla has just become even more attractive as a lease car.
Let’s start with that powertrain, then.
It’s a self-charging hybrid, which means it doesn’t need to be plugged in, and which marries a 2.0 litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce a combined 196 bhp. That equates to a rapid 0-62mph time of 8.1 seconds.
The Corolla Cross will also be available as an all-wheel-drive variant, which adds a second electric motor to the rear axle.
Size wise, the Corolla Cross sits between the C-HR and RAV4 in the Toyota line-up.
And the Japanese firm says the car’s ‘powerful and robust styling’ has been specifically tailored to the European market, complete with a double-trapezoid grille, flared wings and a tapered cabin.
A Toyota spokesperson adds:
“The cabin provides excellent visibility for all occupants, with ample front and rear head and leg room. The large rear door apertures make for easy access and a panoramic sunroof increases the interior light and sense of spaciousness. The load space has a low sill and wide door opening, convenient for loading large items such as buggies and bicycles.”
The Corolla Cross features the latest multimedia technology, with a Europe-specific instrument panel layout with a new configuration of a 12.3-inch driver’s digital cockpit and a 10.5-inch central display. The digital cockpit also uses all-new hardware and software.
And when it comes to safety, the Corolla Cross comes equipped with ‘T-Mate’, the latest generation of Toyota Safety Sense and driving assistance systems.
For the first time, the Pre-Collision System includes acceleration suppression at low speed and Intersection Cut-in Traffic Assist, while there’s also oncoming traffic detection and Intersection Turn Assist.
Other new Toyota Safety Sense functions include an Emergency Driving Stop System, while you can also expect Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Trace Assist and Road Sign Assist systems.
A Toyota spokesperson adds:
“Delivering the practicality of a spacious SUV and the dynamism of the most advanced hybrid electric technology, connectivity and safety systems, the all-new Corolla is designed to meet the daily needs of modern families.”
It’s due to be launched in the Autumn of 2022, so watch this space.
