Toyota reveals new bZ Compact SUV

First we had the all-electric Toyota bZ4X - and now the Japanese firm has unveiled a sibling car, the super-sleek ‘bZ Compact’ SUV-coupe crossover.

The ‘bZ’ bit with both vehicles stands for ‘Beyond Zero’, and it’s a lettering Toyota has picked-up to illustrate its commitment to a cleaner future.

The mid-sized, battery-powered bZ4X SUV was launched earlier this summer as a rival to cars like the Volkswagen ID.5, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6.

The bZ4X also shares the same electric underpinnings with the Subaru Solterra.

But now Toyota has launched a more rakish, swooping version of the bZ in the form of this bZ Compact SUV.

For now it’s just a concept, but it’s not hard to see how the bZ Compact could slot into the Toyota range.

If it gets given the same 71.4 kWh battery set-up as the bZ4X, the bZ Compact could have a range of up to 317 miles.

A spokesperson tells us:

“The car’s aerodynamic form enhances its futuristic look, with the wheels pushed out to the corners to create a powerful stance. Short overhangs and swept-back angles express its advanced technology content, while a narrowed-down cabin gives an agile, low-drag look.”

Besides the zero emissions powertrain, Toyota says the bZ Compact has also been built with ‘low-impact, sustainable materials’ at the forefront of minds.

The ‘edgy’ styling extends to the interior, with ‘distinctive, premium finishes’.

The Toyota spokesperson adds:

“An in-car personal assistant connects driver and passengers with the vehicle through audio and lighting cues that move around the cabin, responding to requests or commands.”

Will it make it to production? Only time will tell, but it’s got a hell of a chance.

In the meantime you can lease a Toyota bZ4X from around £581 per month, or the Subaru Solterra from £608 per month.

I made a number of enquiries into leasing a car and Select came up with the best deal. I dealt with James Bamber who very helpful in dealing with my many questions. They were very easy and straightforward to deal with and would not hesitate to in using them again. Calls and email answered promptly.
