Popcorn Porsches: Stuttgart's stars of the Silver Screen

The Top Gun movie franchise and German manufacturer Porsche are inextricably linked.

And if new flick Top Gun: Maverick has you feeling the need, the need for speed… check out this run-down of the finest celluloid Porsche moments in history.

Maverick, released this week, sees actor Tom Cruise reprising the role of hot-shot aviator Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell, a character he made famous back in 1986.

But Cruise - as well as actor Val Kilmer and actress Jennifer Connelly - aren’t the only stars hoping to steal the limelight in Maverick, because the human thesps have to compete with some four-wheeled heroes in the form of Porsche’s finest supercars.

This special Maverick trailer, produced by Paramount Pictures and Porsche, and titled, ‘Porsche and Top Gun, together again’, shows Cruise ragging about in a Porsche 911 GT3 as well as an all-electric Porsche Taycan.

Of course, the first Top Gun featured actress Kelly McGillis behind the wheel of a sumptuous black Porsche Speedster from the 1950s.

And when it comes to action movies, Porsche has long been the wingman to a Hollywood blockbuster.

Here’s our list of the best popcorn Porsches:

Scarface (1983)

Say 'hello' to my shark-nosed friend. Drug lord Tony Montana, played by Al Pacino, buys love interest Elvira Hancock a brand new 1979 Porsche 928 in this iconic scene.

Le Mans 66 (2019)

This movie, directed by James Mangold, might be centred around Ford vs Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966, but what do viewers see actor Matt Damon - who played the iconic Carroll Shelby - driving in the opening scenes? A bright red Porsche 356A Carrera Speedster, that’s what.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

Brad Pitt stars as a stunt double in Hollywood’s so-called ‘Golden Age’ - and the 1969 Porsche 911 S driven by co-star Margot Robbie is picture-perfect, too.

Risky Business (1983)

Another Tom Cruise movie where he drives a Porsche, this 80s comedy-drama sees Cruise fleeing a sex pimp in a 1979 Porsche 928. That very same car sold at auction in 2021 for a cool £1.5 million.

Against all Odds (1984)

Actor Jeff Bridges plays a washed-up American footballer tasked with locating a gangster’s missing girlfriend in this film noir. And it’s not just the movie's plot that has twists and turns - so does the ionic car chase scene, in which Bridges’ 1983 Porsche 911SC has a street battle with a Ferrari 308 QV GTSi.

Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)

A whole host of supercars appear on screen in this much-loved actioner, starring Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie. And in one famous scene, actor Giovanni Ribisi is seen swiping a gleaming 1999 Porsche 911 996 - in less than a minute - smashing through a plate-glass window in the process.

Bad Boys (1995)

Director Michael Bay’s Bay Boys sees actor Will Smith duelling with a Shelby Cobra in his own 1994 Porsche 964 Turbo. That very car - once owned by Bay himself sold at auction earlier this year for a whopping £1 million.
