These 8 killer car movies will rev your engines this Halloween - and they’re all available to watch on Amazon Prime Video right now.
There’s no shortage of iconic movie motors, from the Ford Mustang piloted by Steve McQueen in Bullitt to the stainless steel DeLorean from Back to the Future.
But here we take a look at what happens when cars go BAD - as these rage-loving vehicles wreak havoc on the road.
Some of the cars and trucks in this list are possessed by evil spirits, some are being piloted by maniacal monsters, while you’ll even find a demonic tyre with a supernatural mind of its own.
Many of the films listed here are included with an Amazon Prime subscription, others will cost you a few quid as a rental, but they’re all worth watching if you’re a horror-loving petrolhead!
The Car: Road to Revenge (2019)
The original The Car isn’t currently available to watch online - which is a shame, as it’s a classic horror where a cop (James Brolin) tries to put the brakes on a possessed Lincoln Continental - but this brutal recent sequel is.
Definitely not one for the faint hearted, as it’s dripping with gore. Here a murdered District Attorney comes back from the dead as an eerie driverless car - a Chrysler 300 C - while ‘set on a ruthless road to avenge his death’, according to the blurb.
The Wraith (1986)
Actor Charlie Sheen stars in this sci-fi horror about a high-school teen who returns from the dead to take revenge against the drag racer who killed him.
Our spooky, undead hero dons leather to pilot a mean and moody blacked-out Dodge M4S Turbo Interceptor.
The only road-legal M4S ever made recently came up at auction with, a ‘buy it now’ price
of a cool £410,000.
Trucks (2000)
This little-known horror, directed by Chris Thomson, is actually based on a short story by author Stephen King. It sees the residents of a small town in Nevada, US, besieged by alien invaders, who use their evil powers to make trucks come to life.
Those vehicles promptly start killing the townsfolk. ‘Run for cover, watch your back, keep your eyes on the road!’, says the tagline.
Hybrid (2011)
Nope, this isn’t a flick about a plug-in hybrid looking to scare away expensive fuel bills - this is another possessed car tale that leaves a slew of bodies in its wake.
The blurb tells us: “Late one night, a mysterious car is brought into the Chicago police impound garage after a deadly traffic accident. The on-call mechanics soon discover the car has a mind of its own. With hundreds of horsepower and two tons of reinforced steel at its command, it's a seemingly unstoppable killing machine capable of outrunning - and outwitting - humans.”
The four-wheeled predator can even change forms, and appears as a Chevrolet Nova, a Chevrolet Corvette, and a Dodge Charger.
Christine (1983)
A true classic of the genre, Christine is based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name and directed by horror maestro John Carpenter.
It sees an unsuspecting young chap buying an evil car with a mind of its own.
The tagline tells us: “How do you kill something that can’t possibly be alive..?’
The car in question is a 1958 Plymouth Fury, which would set you back around £40,000 to buy today.
Road Train (2010)
Also known as ‘Road Kill’, this Australian fright flick sees a group of teenagers terrorised by a driverless truck in the outback.
Expect jump scares and supernatural shocks galore.
And it has been described as Maximum Overdrive meets Wolf Creek.
Duel (1971)
Still genuinely creepy to this day, Duel was directed by a certain Steven Spielberg - his first ever movie, shot for TV - and many have described it as ‘Jaws, but the shark is a truck’.
The plot sees a middle-aged salesman, played by Dennis Weaver, being harassed by a dilapidated tanker truck in the desert.
The driver of the truck remains hidden at (almost) all times of the movie, leaving viewers to ponder whether the truck itself is possessed.
Duel has inspired countless other horrors, not least 2001’s Jeepers Creepers, in which a bat-winged demon uses a 1940s Chevrolet COE truck to track down tasty humans to eat. You can watch Jeepers Creepers with your Amazon Prime subscription, too.
Rubber (2010)
This utterly bizarre horror-comedy follows ‘Robert’, an inanimate tyre that gets abandoned in the desert, only to come to life.
Using his evil telepathic skills, Robert is able to destroy anything it wishes… before rolling on to the next victim.
