The Tesla Model Y was Europe’s best-selling car in 2023 - and it’s the first time in history that an electric vehicle (EV) has bagged top spot.
That’s according to preliminary stats from market research specialists Dataforce and published in Automotive News Europe.
A total of 254,822 new Tesla Model Ys hit European roads last year, which is around 20,000 more than there were new Dacia Sanderos. The VW T-Roc was placed third, ahead of the Renault Clio and Peugeot 208.
The trend mirrors what we’ve seen in the UK. The Tesla Model Y was the fifth best-selling car, overall, in the UK in 2023, and also the No.1 most popular EV, triumphing over the MG4.

Tesla’s famous ‘Autopilot’ system is fitted as standard, which lets the car steer, accelerate and brake automatically within its lane.
Meanwhile the Model Y’s cabin gets every bell and whistle we’ve come to expect from a Tesla lease - including a massive 15-inch touchscreen, wireless phone charging, heated seats in the front and back, heated steering wheel, reversing camera, and a panoramic glass roof.
