Tesla Cybertruck delivered to first batch of customers

After years of delays, one of the most eagerly-anticipated new vehicles - the Tesla Cybertruck - is now being delivered to customers.

The scene was set last week when Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to ‘X’ to exclaim: “Cybertrucks are on their way to Tesla stores in North America!”

And now an official delivery event at the manufacturer's factory in Austin, Texas, US, has seen the first examples being handed over to a small number of customers.

While it's all happening Stateside, for now, the Cybertruck has also just been added to Tesla's UK website, as excitement builds for a proper European launch, too.

So, what do we know about the Cybertruck so far?

Well, the latest delivery event also saw Tesla revealing official details when it comes to power and range.

The steel-shelled Cybertruck will have a range of up to 340 miles between charges, a 4,990 kg towing capacity, and enough power to see it accelerating from 0-60mph in just 2.6 seconds.

To prove that point, a jaw-dropping new video sees the top-of-the-range Cybertruck - the 845 hp 'Cyberbeast' - out-gunning a Porsche 911 in a drag race. As if that wasn't cool enough, the $100,000, all-wheel-drive, tri-motor Cyberbeast performed the feat while towing a separate Porsche 911 on the back of a trailer!

A cheaper, rear-wheel drive Cybertruck will cost from $60,990 (£48,000), but won't be made available until 2025. The RWD Cybertruck gets a range of up to 250 miles while still being capable of getting from 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds.

While the Cybertruck is sure to attract Hollywood owners, it has also been built for the tough stuff. It gets electronically adaptive air suspension, 17 inches of ground clearance and 12 inches of travel in the suspension.

Tesla is also promising a 1,134 kg payload and a load bed that's durable enough - and big enough - for construction materials. To put that payload into perspective, the double cab Ford Ranger has a payload of up to 1,067 kg, so you can see how much heft the Cybertruck can handle.

When it comes to goodies in the cabin, Tesla says the Cybertruck can be fitted with a 'massive' 18.5-inch 'Infinity' touchscreen in the front and a 9.4-inch touchscreen in the rear. A 15-speaker audio system promises 'recording studio-like' sound.

Meanwhile a 'hospital grade' air particulate filter should get rid of any airborne nasties.

Rather astonishingly, Elon Musk also suggests the Cybertruck could be used, briefly, as a ‘boat’, owing to just how waterproof it is!

Recent days have seen it wading through deep seawater. And back in September 2022, Musk wrote on Twitter: “Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes & even seas that aren't too choppy.”

He added: “You'd need an electric propeller mounted on the tow hitch to go faster than a few knots. There might (be) a creative wheel hub design that can generate meaningful thrust."

When it comes to charging, plugging the Cybertruck into a Tesla Superchargers operating at 250 kW will give you around 136 miles of range in just 15 minutes.

And the Cybertruck should also prove handy to have on work sits, with 120V and 240V outlets in the bed and cabin to power your tools - or camping equipment.

I made a number of enquiries into leasing a car and Select came up with the best deal. I dealt with James Bamber who very helpful in dealing with my many questions. They were very easy and straightforward to deal with and would not hesitate to in using them again. Calls and email answered promptly.
