If you superstitiously salute magpies when behind the wheel, you’re not alone.
Because a new survey by Alfa Romeo has found that half of all Brits (50%) believe in the idea of ‘luck’, while 60% of the UK public believe in the idea of ‘fate’.
Londoners take the crown as the most superstitious in the UK - with 54% of respondents living there saying they would ‘consider themselves as superstitious’.
That compares to 39% of respondents from the North West, the second most superstitious region of the country, and only 32% of those in Yorkshire and The Humber.
For young adults aged between 18-24, 53% believe luck is the secret ingredient for success.
Yet life experience appears to bring scepticism. OIder respondents aged 65 and above weren’t as convinced, with only 22% believing luck plays a role in their life.
Of course, the most common road-related superstition is the idea that you must salute a solitary magpie in order to ward-off bad luck.
Alfa Romeo conducted the survey to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its famous four leaf clover ‘Quadrifoglio’ badge, which adorns the Italian firm’s most exotic and powerful cars.
The story goes back to 1923 when legendary Italian racing driver Ugo Sivocci painted a four-leaf clover on the side of his Alfa Romeo RL car. Guess what happened? He won the race! And just like that, the Quadrifoglio became synonymous with Alfa Romeo.
Julie David, Managing Director, Alfa Romeo UK, said: “The Quadrifoglio emblem has brought fortune and fun to all drivers who have driven an Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio since 1923, including our award-winning Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio models.”
