Lower fuel consumption, better comfort and improved looks - say hello to the 2022 facelifted Skoda Karoq.
The Karoq has been a popular choice for lease customers since it first went on sale back in 2017, sitting as the entry point to Skoda’s SUV range, behind the mid-sized Kamiq and full-fat Kodiaq.
And Skoda has announced some new tweaks to the Karoq that should make it even easier to live with.
The first thing you’ll notice is that it looks different to the outgoing model. There’s a wider grille at the front, restyled front and rear aprons, as well as slimmer and sharper LED headlights and tail lights. You can also have LED Matrix headlights as an option for the first time.
A lot of thought has gone in to improving the aerodynamics, too. There are new aero inserts, a longer rear spoiler, new alloys that reduce wind turbulence around the wheels, and a covered underbody. And all of that adds up to better fuel economy, says Skoda.
The new Karoq is also gentler on the planet. There are updated upholstery options that include seat covers partly made from recycled plastic bottles. Meanwhile the optional tri-zone ‘Climatronic’ air con system and ambient lighting offers increased levels of comfort.
There are three main options in the form of two trim levels - ‘SE Drive’ and ‘SE L’ - as well as a specific ‘SportLine variant’. This range-topping SportLine comes as standard with a powerful 190 PS 2.0 litre petrol engine mated to a seven-speed DSG box, and it’s also got four-wheel-drive right out of the box.
A Skoda spokerson adds:
“The all-wheel-drive system makes use of a sixth-generation electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, which is roughly 0.8 kg lighter than its predecessor and more efficient. An integrated control unit enables the system to react more quickly, disengaging and re-engaging all-wheel drive as required within fractions of a second.”
The SportLine model comes with Skoda’s ‘Black’ pack as standard, which includes chrome-effect tailpipes, gloss black roof rails, and black window frames.
If you’re looking specifically for all-wheel-drive, as well as the 2.0 TSI petrol unit you can also plump for a 2.0 TDI Evo diesel mill producing 150 PS. There are two smaller petrol engines, a 1.0 TSI and a 1.5 TSI, the latter of which has decent power of 150 PS and also features Skoda’s ‘Active Cylinder Technology’ (ACT), which further reduces fuel consumption by automatically shutting down two cylinders when engine load is low.
Johannes Neft, Skoda Board Member for Technical Development, says:
“The KAROQ’s engines are economical and efficient. High injection pressures and plasma-coated cylinder crankcases, among other things, ensure low emissions and fuel consumption in the TSI petrol engines. In the diesels, we’re using two SCR catalytic converters and a twin dosing method for particularly effective exhaust gas treatment.”
Skoda lease customers have a choice of two digital instrument clusters with an 8 or 10.25-inch display as well as four infotainment systems with touchscreens measuring up to 9.2 inches.
Meanwhile all Karoqs come as standard with plenty of driver assistance and safety systems, that includes Front Assist with City Emergency Brake and Predictive Pedestrian Protection.
As an alternative to rivals like the Volkswagen T-Roc, the Audi Q3 or the Peugeot 3008, the new Skoda Karoq is well worth a look, particularly when you factor-in the huge, family-friendly 520 litre boot.
