Things are going sideways for Skoda… as the firm has just set a new Guinness World Record for ‘Longest Continuous Vehicle Drift on Ice’.
In case you’re not familiar with the lingo, a ‘drift’ is when a driver intentionally oversteers to break traction, before controlling the resulting skid around a corner for as long as he or she can.
They’re normally enjoyed by spirited motorists for just a few seconds at a time.
But Skoda has managed to drift for a whopping 4.568 miles - the equivalent of almost FOUR laps of the UK’s famous Brands Hatch racetrack - on a frozen lake in Sweden.
The slide also lasted almost 16 minutes and the top speed during the winning run was 30.25 mph.
The car used to complete the task was the all-electric Skoda Enyaq iV vRS - an all-wheel drive SUV you can lease with Select and which has power of 299 PS.
And because the Enyaq iV vRS is battery-powered, Skoda was also handed a SECOND record for ‘Longest Continuous Vehicle Drift on Ice (electric car)’.
The drift beat the previous benchmark of 3.872 miles, set in China in 2022.
Despite how much fun it looks in these pics, the World Record was hard won.
Skoda spent five days on location, in sub-zero temperatures, and 18 hours trying to perfect the drift.
The Enyaq iV vRS SUV also needed specially-sourced studded tyres for greater purchase on the lake’s frozen surface - with 5mm studs on the front, 2mm studs on the rear.
A Skoda spokesperson says:
“As with all Enyaq iV vRS production models, the record-breaking car featured sports suspension 15 mm lower at the front over the standard (non-vRS) Enyaq iV, and 10 mm lower at the rear.
“Enhanced dynamics came courtesy of progressive steering, in addition to Drive Mode Select and optional Dynamic Chassis Control for an adaptive damping system. The car was also fitted with exterior body enhancements including vRS sports bumpers with gloss black E-shaped air curtain surrounds, gloss black exterior detailing, unique vRS badging and Škoda’s innovative Crystal Face grille, illuminated with 131 LEDs – all of which come as standard specification on UK Enyaq iV vRS SUV models.”
Another great thing about the Enyaq iV vRS SUV, which will be arriving with customers this summer, is that it supports 150 kW rapid charging, allowing you to take the battery to 80% in a little more than half an hour.
There’s also the Enyaq Coupé iV vRS variant, which has the same spec as the SUV but features a sleeker, sloping rear end.
The Enyaq iV vRS SUV has a range of up to 321 miles, the Enyaq Coupé iV vRS can managed slightly more - thanks to better aerodynamics - at 323 miles
