Step forward this year’s Car of the Year 2024, the electric Renault Scenic E-Tech.
And if you’re in the lease market for one, there’s good news - because Renault has just introduced a more affordable ‘Comfort Range’ variant.
Despite having only been launched late last year, the Scenic E-Tech has clearly impressed the team of 59 motoring journalists from 22 European countries who decide on the Car of the Year accolade.
The prestigious prize was announced at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. Make no mistake, it’s a major coup for Renault and the rejuvenated Scenic, with the family-sized SUV beating the BMW 5 Series to the No.1 spot.
The UK’s own Paul Horrell, motoring journalist at TopGear.com, was one of the scribes on the jury. As he points out, no manufacturer pays to enter, no juror gets paid to do it.
And speaking about the Scenic E-Tech, he wrote: “There's space for five and useful versatility, even if it doesn't have some of the original Scenic's tricks (which few actually used). The design is agreeable outside and well-furnished inside. It's good to drive, with an agility helped by the well-contained mass. Impressive electric range too. It's the best normal-priced family car on sale, so it gets big points from me.”
The five other finalists in the Car of the Year comp were the BYD Seal, Kia EV9, Peugeot E-3008/3008, Toyota C-HR, and Volvo EX30.
Fabrice Cambolive, CEO of Renault, said: “Winning the prestigious ‘The Car of the Year’ award is a great source of pride for everyone at Renault Group and the Renault brand. This recognition demonstrates that we have made the right choices: record-breaking range, generous and inviting roominess, all with a closely managed environmental footprint! When you add in the driving pleasure and ‘voiture à vivre’ equipment such as the new Solarbay panoramic sunroof or the latest generation OpenR Link system with integrated Google systems, Scenic has all the right features to shore up its position on the European EV market.”
Up until now, the Scenic was available exclusively with a ‘High Range’ battery - an 87 kWh unit providing power of 220 hp and a maximum range of 379 miles between charges.
Now, however, Renault has launched a smaller 60kWh ‘Comfort Range’ battery, that comes with power of 170hp and a reduced range of up to 260 miles.
And Renault says its new addition ‘significantly increases the affordability of the Scenic E-Tech electric’. We’ll bring you precise leasing prices as and when they arrive.
You can enjoy the Comfort Range battery exclusively with the entry-level ‘Techno’ trim. You still get very decent charging speeds, up to 22kW AC and up to 130kW DC, the latter of which can take the battery from 15-80% full in just 32 minutes.
This new Scenic E-Tech also comes generously equipped as standard, including screen stands integrated into the armrests in the rear, 19-inch alloys, electric flush door handles, and a 12-inch multimedia screen that gets full Google integration.
You get wireless smartphone mirroring and charging, a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, heated front seats and steering wheel, ambient lighting, and electric boot opening.
And when it comes to driver assistance and safety tech, lease customers can also expect intelligent adaptive cruise control, traffic and speed sign recognition, driver attention alert, distance warning alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane centring, active emergency braking system with pedestrian and cyclist detection and blind spot warning.
That’s a hell of a lot of kit, and it should offer real peace of mind to any families looking for an award-winning people mover.
