Renault 5 E-Tech named ‘Car of the Year’… again!

The champagne corks have popped again for the Renault 5 E-Tech, after the electric hatch scooped the overall prize at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2025.

It’s fair to say that the retro-tastic Renault 5 E-Tech has made a big impact since its debut.

Back in November 2024, the good people at TopGear.com named it their ‘Car of the Year’ for 2025.

Then, earlier this January, the Renault 5 E-Tech scooped the prestigious ‘European Car of the Year’ silverware, alongside its sibling vehicle the Alpine A290.

Now the 5 E-Tech has grabbed the big trophy at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2025 (widely considered as the ‘motoring Oscars’, according to the organisers) while also winning the ‘Small Electric Car of the Year’ gong.

Steve Huntingford, Editor of What Car?, said: "Given the affection that people have for the R5's design, Renault could have penny-pinched on the engineering and still sold as many as it could make. But instead, it's clearly thrown everything at the car, with this resulting in something that's comfortable, good to drive, very well priced, and equipped with an infotainment system that shames those in some far more expensive machines."

You can lease a Renault 5 E-Tech right now with Select Car Leasing - and it’s probably more affordable than you might think, with prices starting at around £246 per month*.

It’s available with either a 40 kWh or 52 kWh battery, with a max range of either 190 miles or 248 miles, depending on which unit you choose. A heat pump comes as standard whichever one you go for.

There was more good news for Renault from What Car? as the Clio was named ‘Small Car of the Year’.

Adam Wood, Managing Director, Renault UK, said: “The expert team at What Car? test and evaluate hundreds of cars each year, so for the Renault 5 E-Tech electric to be their number one is further proof that R5 is a special car. With Clio also retaining its ‘Small Car of the Year’ title, it’s clear that Renault has class-leading credentials with two of the very best small cars available, whether customers are looking for an electric, hybrid or petrol car.”

Elsewhere at the bash, the Toyota Corolla was ‘Family Car of the Year’ while the Kia Sportage (above) was ‘Family SUV of the Year’.

The silverware for ‘Plug-in Hybrid of the Year’ went to the affordable MG HS and the Tesla Model 3 RWD was the ‘Executive Car of the Year’.

The UK’s best seven-seater, meanwhile, is the overhauled new Hyundai Santa Fe (below).

Really helpful, and especially efficient in letting me know what steps I had to complete during my order procedure.
