Land Rover has unleashed what it calls the ‘most powerful Range Rover ever’ in the form of the 635 PS Sport SV.
The Range Rover line-up is no stranger to that ‘SV’ badge.
In the past we had the Range Rover Sport SVR - aka ‘Special Vehicle Racing’ - which boasted power of 575 PS and was powered by a 5.0 litre supercharged V8.
The old Sport SVR disappeared from the line-up a couple of years ago.
But this - the new Sport SV - is the SVR’s successor. And what a beast it is, combining sumptuous luxury with face-melting performance.
It’s powered by a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 that’s also equipped with mild-hybrid wizardry and which can propel the SV down the road from 0-62 mph in just 3.6 seconds and then on to a top speed of 180 mph.
That’s Lamborghini Urus territory and very much puts the Range Rover Sport SV into the ‘super SUV’ bracket.
And it’s not just the powertrain that catches the eye.
The Range Rover Sport SV - which is priced from £83,620 - also boasts hydraulic interlinked ‘6D Dynamics’ air suspension with pitch and roll control, which keeps a near-level stance even during ‘extreme acceleration, braking and cornering’, says Land Rover.
There’s the option of massive 23-inch carbon fibre wheels while the Sport SV also gets carbon ceramic brakes from specialists Brembo.
Compared with the regular Range Rover Sport, which was launched last year, the exterior features a reprofiled front-end and lower body sides, as well as a carbon fibre bonnet and quad tailpipe finishers.
Meanwhile the cabin is awash with creature comforts, including new ‘Body and Soul’ seats, which have inbuilt speakers and also vibrate in time to your tunes for a fully-immersive audio experience.
Punch the ‘SV Mode’ button on the steering wheel and the suspension will be lowered by a further 15mm while the steering, eight-speed automatic gearbox, throttle response and exhaust note are all amplified.
A Land Rover spokesperson tells us: “New Range Rover Sport SV is the most powerful and dynamic Range Rover Sport ever, blending supreme performance and dynamism with peerless Range Rover capability, refinement and reductive design. Its array of performance-enhancing technologies includes the most advanced suspension system in its class and a sensory audio system with wellness benefits.”
Elsewhere in the Range Rover Sport line-up, there’s also an update for one of the popular plug-in hybrid powertrains.
The old ‘P510e’ PHEV will be replaced by a more powerful ‘P550e’, which has an electric range of up to 75 miles between charges.
The P550e will also be rapid, covering 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds, compared with 5.4 seconds for the P510e.
