- ‘Intensive’ hot weather testing for Range Rover Electric
- Tackles scorching-hot dunes in United Arab Emirates
- Will be ‘the most capable electric luxury SUV’
- Client reservations begin 2025
The incoming Range Rover Electric has been undergoing the ‘most intensive testing any Range Rover has ever endured’ ahead of order books opening next year.
The Range Rover Electric is one of the most eagerly anticipated cars of 2025, full stop.
That’s largely because so many details about the luxury SUV, including the powertrain, are still to be confirmed by Land Rover.
It’s expected to utilise a big 100 kWh battery, have a range in excess of 300 miles between charges, and have power of around 530 hp, similar to what you get with V8-powered Range Rover - but we haven’t had any official word just yet.
What we do now know is that the Range Rover Electric will be capable of blatting through 50C temperatures and boiling-hot sand dunes, after it was pictured this week undergoing ‘rigorous’ hot-weather testing in the United Arab Emirates.
Land Rover says the prototypes are ‘currently in one of the world’s most unforgiving climates, undergoing the most intensive testing any Range Rover has ever endured’.
A spokesperson adds: “Vehicle performance and efficiency are fiercely challenged to ensure the entire propulsion system is reliably temperature‑controlled and built to support longevity and optimum range.”
And that’s why Land Rover is confident that the battery-powered Range Rover will be ‘the most capable electric luxury SUV’ on the lease market, with other rivals including the Volvo EX90, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Electric, and the incoming Porsche Cayenne Electric.
One of the tests the Range Rover Electric has been pitting itself against is a 100 metre hill climb up fine sand. An abundance of low-speed torque and an advanced terrain response system meant the EV matched or outperformed other Range Rovers with a traditional combustion engine.
An Intelligent Torque Management system also distributes the wheel slip management task directly to each individual electric drive control unit, reducing the torque reaction time at each wheel from around 100 milliseconds, to as little as 1 millisecond, offering improved traction control while driving on fine sand.
Before the Range Rover Electric arrives next year, you can already lease the flagship SUV with an efficient and powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain that offers a range of up to 70 miles using electricity alone.
