This is the new Taycan Turbo GT - and it’s the most powerful production Porsche of all time.
It’s not like the regular Porsche Taycan was a slouch to begin with.
The recently-improved Taycan Turbo S - the former range-topping model - boasts peak power of 952 PS and is capable of sprinting from 0-62mph in an eye-watering 2.4 seconds.
The new Taycan Turbo GT, however, well and truly turns the dial up to 11.
There are two GT models to choose from - the regular Turbo GT and the Turbo GT with something called the ‘Weissach package’, the latter of which is built for the track and sees the rear-seats being jettisoned to save weight.
Both utilise the same 105 kWh battery as the standard Taycan
Both get a staggering 1,100 PS on tap. And the stripped-out, lightweight Weissach package variant can blink from 0-62 mph in just 2.2 seconds, and then on to 124 mph in 6.4 seconds.
When you consider that the petrol-powered Porsche 911 Turbo S takes 2.7 seconds to reach 62mph from a standstill, you realise just how lightning-quick the Taycan Turbo GT really is.
No wonder, then, that the GT has been obliterating race circuit records.
The Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach package has just earned the title of fastest electric series-production car at the Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca, in California, with a time of 1:27.87min - beating 1:30 min time set by a Tesla Model S Plaid in 2020.
Meanwhile a road-legal Taycan Turbo GT Weissach also set a new class record on Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife, with a lap time of 7:07.55 min. That, says Porsche, is a full 25 seconds faster than a Taycan Turbo S Sport managed in August 2022.
Porsche’s Model Line Vice President Kevin Giek said: “The two records in Laguna Seca and on the Nordschleife show what great track potential there is in the Taycan. To prove your mettle on the track, it’s not enough to simply have as much power as possible. The overall package of accelerating and braking, cornering grip, aerodynamics, stability and fine-tuning has to be right. In the Taycan Turbo GT and the Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach package in particular, our engineers have achieved this in absolutely stunning fashion. They have already done a great job with the recently updated existing Taycan models. But our new GT cars yet again clearly raise the bar even higher in terms of driving dynamics.”
Porsche says something called ‘Attack Mode’ helped to achieve those jaw-dropping lap times. Punch a button or grab the right-hand paddle and Attack Mode unleashes an extra 163 PS - and the full 1,100 PS of power - for up to 10 seconds.
Also key to the Taycan Turbo GT’s performance is its uprated pulse inverter, which sits on the rear axle and converts DC power from the battery to the AC power used in the car’s electric motor. The GT’s inverter features silicon carbide for better efficiency, while the gearbox has been toughened to cope with higher torque.
Elsewhere, a liberal use of carbon fibre means the regular Taycan Turbo GT weighs up to 75 kg less than the Taycan Turbo S.
Carbon ceramic brakes are standard, as is Porsche’s sophisticated ‘Active Ride’ suspension set-up and the ‘Sport Chrono package’ from the Taycan Turbo S, which lets you really dial-in the performance.
With the two-seat Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach package, you get more aggressive exterior styling, a huge carbon rear wing, better aerodynamics, and a higher top speed at 190 mph.
The Porsche Taycan GT is priced from £186,300 to buy outright, and the Weissach package is a no-cost option.
