There’s a new Porsche Taycan on the way - and it has just posted a jaw-dropping lap time on the infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife race track.
Porsche is readying to reveal a facelifted Taycan later this year.
And by the looks of it, the German manufacturer is also set to drop a new performance variant that wipes the floor with the current top-of-the-range, 761 PS Turbo S.
This battery-powered ballistic missile is expected to be called the Taycan 'Turbo GT', and it’ll come with an aggressive aero bodykit and track-ready, lowered suspension.
For the time being, Porsche is simply describing its car as a ‘pre-series Taycan’, while declining to tell us any power or range figures.
But what we do know is that it has just lapped the Nürburgring in 7:07.55 seconds while obliterating the Tesla Model S Plaid’s time of 7:35.579.
Porsche’s test driver Lars Kern also went a full 26 seconds faster than he did back in August 2022 while piloting a Taycan Turbo S Sport sedan equipped with the performance package.
To put that 7:07.55 lap time into perspective, it’s only a couple of seconds shy of the 7:05.298 lap time set by the electric, 1,914 PS Rimac Nevera in 2023.
Porsche head of the model line Kevin Giek said: “Twenty-six seconds (ahead of the Taycan Turbo S) is half an eternity in motorsport. Lars’ lap time of 7:07.55 minutes on the Nordschleife is sensational, putting the Taycan in the same league as electric hypercars. And the impressive thing about it is that over several laps, Lars clocked almost exactly the same time.”
For safety reasons, the Taycan test car was equipped with the legally prescribed roll cage, along with racing bucket seats.
