- Updated Porsche 911 Carrera T revealed
- Stripped-back 'Touring' model
- Sits above entry-level 911 Carrera
- Exclusively available with six-speed manual gearbox
This is the new Porsche 911 Carrera T, promising stripped-back, manual-only, pure driving pleasure.
The 911 Carrera T has been around for more than five decades, with the ‘T’ standing for ‘Touring’ and the model focused around lightweight construction and agile handling.
It’s not the quickest or most powerful 911 going, but it’s about Porsche ‘concentrating on the essentials’ of motoring enjoyment.
To that effect, there’s just one gearbox, a slick six-speed manual that features a tactile walnut ball gearshift lever and the Carrera T wears its old-skool credentials with pride.
It’s also now available as both a coupe or a cabriolet convertible.
Price wise, the £111,300 911 Carrera T sits above the entry-level 911 Carrera but behind the Carrera GTS.
With reduced insulation, lightweight windows and sports bucket seats, the 911 Carrera T weighs-in at just 1,478 kg - which is 40 kg lighter than the 911 Carrera.
It’s powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo boxer engine that’s shared with the regular 911 Carrera. Power of 394 PS and 450 Nm of torque drives the rear wheels and lets the coupe accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds while the cabriolet takes 4.7 seconds to do the same dash.
The regular 911 Carrera coupe, on the other hand, takes just 3.9 seconds to do the same sprint when the ‘Sport Chrono Package’ is engaged.
There are bigger and more powerful brakes compared with the last ‘T’ while Porsche reckons the standard sports exhaust sounds much more ‘emotive’ with the sound insulation pared back.
Rear-axle steering comes as standard, as does adaptive sports suspension which is lowered by 10 mm, while the anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles have been tuned for neutral handling. The 911 Carrera T has 20-inch alloys at the front, 21-inch rims at the back.
The Carrera T also looks different compared with other models in the 911 series.
It’s immediately marked-out by stickers with a shift pattern logo in the triangular rear windows while there’s an aerodynamically optimised spoiler lip taken from the 911 Carrera GTS.
Like the drivetrain, the 911 Carrera T’s cabin also adopts a ‘emphatically purist’ approach, says Porsche, but you still get a heated GT steering wheel, four-way electric sports seats, door panel inlays in black brushed aluminium, and tartan patterned fabric.
A Porsche spokesperson adds: “Pure driving pleasure, agile handling, emotive sound and a focus on the essentials are the distinguishing features of this rear-wheel drive sports car.”
