Polestar promises ‘extreme fast charging’ for its EVs

Electric vehicle drivers might soon be able to get 100 miles of range from just five minutes of charge, thanks to breakthrough tech being showcased by Polestar.

The Swedish EV manufacturer has joined forces with an Israeli firm, called StoreDot, which specialises in creating ‘extreme fast charging’, or ‘XFC’, battery cells.

The recharging process itself is also optimised by sophisticated Artificial Intelligence algorithms.

And Polestar plans to put the ‘100-in-5’ promises to the test in its upcoming, luxury Polestar 5 saloon.

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, says: “StoreDot is making huge strides forward in the development of their extreme fast charging technology and we are a proud investor and partner in its evolution. StoreDot’s pioneering extreme fast charging batteries, combined with our upcoming top-of-the-line electric powertrain, can revolutionise the ownership experience for EV owners with the ability to recharge in minutes.”

Dr Doron Myersdorf, StoreDot CEO, adds: “Polestar has been one of our key investors and collaborators as we develop our XFC technology. Next year we’ll show how a full-scale battery module developed by Polestar with this revolutionary technology can be charged. Charging anxiety will soon be a thing of the past.”

To put that ‘100-in-5’ boast in context, using a ‘bp pulse50’ public rapid charger - often found at motorway services across the UK - you can expect around 40 miles of range in 15 minutes, depending on what car you’re driving.

In other Polestar news, the firm has also revealed new details about the incoming Polestar 4 crossover. The SUV-coupe could be the first production car to feature something called ‘Mobileye Chauffeur’ - an ‘eyes-off, point-to-point autonomous driving’ system for motorways, as well as ‘eyes-on’ automated driving for other environments.

It’s thanks to a collaboration between Polestar and tech companies Mobileye and Luminar, and the system will offer a ‘turnkey, safer and high-performing automated system’.

The Polestar 4 is due to arrive in the UK next year, so watch this space.

In the meantime you can lease the stylish Polestar 2 fastback with Select Car Leasing from £422 per month*,

With my previous lease contract coming to an end, I had to find a new lease deal at a time when a lot of my time was taken up with treatment of a couple of health issues. I needn't have worried as Select Car Leasing did all the work to find the car model that met all my requirements at a cost that was well within my budget. They handled all the discussions with the lease finance company, arranged the delivery time I wanted, and quickly resolved the couple of technical snags I encountered when signing off the e-contract documents. The whole process was quick and easy and I can't think of any part of their service that could have been delivered more effectively or quickly.
