When is a Polestar 2 not a Polestar 2? When it’s a boat!
Yep, this is the Candela C-8, a high-performance hydrofoil speedboat.
Candela Technology, like Polestar, is a high-tech Swedish company. And, again like Polestar, Candela is on a mission to show what can be achieved when you swap traditional internal combustion engines for electric power.
So, it’s only natural that the two firms should join forces.
Underpinning the wave-making C-8 is the same 69 kWh battery pack and DC charging technology that you’ll find in the Polestar 2 (below) Standard range Single motor model.
In the Polestar 2, that equates to power of 234 PS and a range of up to 297 miles between charges.
In the Candela C-8, on the other hand, it brings a range of up to 57 nautical miles on a single charge and a cruising speed of 22 knots - roughly 25 mph.
The C-8’s party piece is the use of computer-guided hydrofoils - underwater wings that lift the hull above the surface, thereby overcoming the friction of water - and Candela says the craft uses up to 80% less energy at high speeds than a traditional motorboat.
Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela, says:
“With batteries from Polestar, the Candela C-8 becomes the first electric vessel that can travel to destinations that were previously only reachable by combustion engine boats. The Candela C-8 powered by Polestar marks a significant breakthrough for electrification at sea.”
What has bobbing up and down on the ocean got to do with cars, we hear you ask?
Well, Polestar says that collaborations like this are all part of the manufacturer’s long term goal to ‘drive sustainable electric mobility beyond the automotive industry’.
And with knowledge exchanges like this, the Polestars you lease in the future may be all the better for it.
