Major update for Peugeot 208 and E-208

Peugeot has given its traditionally-powered 208 and the electric E-208 a major facelift - and here’s everything you need to know.

First of all - looks good, doesn’t it?

There’s a sporty new design for the exterior, including a front light signature that was first introduced with the 9X8 Hypercar (below), as well as a fresh front grille.

There are also eye-catching improvements to the powertrains available.

The electric E-208 has been handed more oomph - up to 156 bhp from 136 bhp as standard - while the range between charges has also increased to a max of 248 miles.

The traditionally-fuelled 208 will now be available with mild-hybrid tech, which Peugeot says can boost fuel economy by up to 15%.

Meanwhile the cabins of both the 208 and the E-208 have also been uprated, with 10 inch infotainment touchscreens now coming as standard.

Jérôme Micheron, Peugeot Product Director, tells us: "Working on a model as iconic and successful as the 208 is always a tall order. Our aim was to take the design and performance of the 208 to a higher level while preserving the soul of this model in order to remain at the top of B-segment sales in Europe. The new 208 is more 208 than ever: more feline, more fun to drive, more technological, and all-in-all, more irresistible.”

The 208 and E-208 will be available with a choice of seven new colour options - including this tremendous ‘Agueda Yellow’ shade.

All new 208 models feature gloss black door mirrors, no matter which colour you choose, and the GT variants come as standard with gloss black wheel arches.

The ‘PEUGEOT’ lettering at the back is bolder than before while the electric model also gets a new ‘E’ badge.

The E-208 will get a slightly larger 51 kWh battery as standard, which supports 100 kW rapid charging and can be charged from 20-80% in around 25 minutes, according to Peugeot.

The new hybrid powertrains are available with power of either 100 bhp or 136 bhp and are combined with an e-DSC6 dual-clutch electrified six-speed automatic gearbox. They offer, says Peugeot, ‘Extra torque at low revs and up to 15% lower fuel consumption’.

A spokesperson adds: “In urban driving, the new 208 HYBRID 100 and HYBRID 136 can operate for more than 50% of the time in 100% zero-emission electric mode.”

Both the 208 and E-208 are also available with all of the driver assistance and safety features we’ve come to expect, including adaptive cruise control, active lane departure warning with lane correction, and blind spot monitoring.

Three trims will be up for grabs - ‘Active’, ‘Allure’, and range-topping ‘GT’.

The mid-range Allure adds unique 16-inch alloys, a body-coloured grille, front and rear parking sensors and a 10 inch digital instrument panel.

Meanwhile the swanky GT models feature larger 17-inch wheels, a high-def reversing camera, keyless entry and start, and eight colour ambient lighting.

Order books will open in October this year. The 208 will compete with the likes of the Renault Clio and Volkswagen Polo, while the E-208 rivals the Vauxhall Corsa Electric, the Volkswagen ID.3, and the MG4 EV.

And in the meantime you can lease the Peugeot E-208 - in ‘GT trim - with Select Car Leasing from just £270 per month*.
