Brits swerve larger cars due to parking fears

If you’ve ever plumped for a smaller car because you were worried about parking a bigger one, you’re not alone, according to a new survey by Volkswagen.

The good people at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles polled 1,000 family car drivers about the potential anxieties involved with parking.

The majority (57%) have ‘concerns’ around buying or leasing a large car because of ‘parking stress’, despite what VW reckons is a ‘growing preference for a larger vehicle’.

Reversing parking - not, as it turns out, the dreaded parallel park - was actually the manoeuvre Brits fear the most (15%).

Meanwhile plenty of respondents (40%) said parking is even more stressful when there’s a member of their family in the car with them.

Overall, around half (49%) find parking stressful in general, and take measures to avoid it when they can.

Why is Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles sharing this information with us?

Well, the firm points out that its fully-electric ID. Buzz MPV - also available to lease in ‘Cargo’ panel van form from Select Van Leasing - can park itself at the touch of a button.

The ‘Park Assist Plus’ function means a driver only has to park once. The driver then ‘saves’ that manoeuvre into the ID. Buzz’s brain, and the car can then complete the same sequence autonomously when asked to do so.

A VW spokesperson tells us: “The Park Assist Plus function can automatically reverse park ID. Buzz in both parallel and perpendicular spaces, with parallel parking frequently cited as a stress-inducing manoeuvre for drivers. The average UK garage space measures 2.4m x 4.9m, as has been the case for many years. But with the average size of vehicles in the UK car parc continuing to increase in order to meet demand and increased safety legislation, UK parkers are challenged with executing ever more precise parking manoeuvres, both out and about and when parking their vehicle in a garage.”

To illustrate the point, VW got popular social media influencers Frankie and Prar Eshun (@theeshuns) to give the technology a whirl for themselves, and you can watch that video via YouTube, above.

Besides being able to sit back and let the ID. Buzz sort the parking, the people-mover has plenty more going for it - including killer good looks and a range of up to 258 miles between charges.

You can lease the VW ID. Buzz with Select Car Leasing from £345 per month*, or you can lease the ID. Buzz Cargo from Select Van Leasing from £322 per month, ex VAT**.
