- New Omoda 9 hits the UK
- Plug-in hybrid SUV
- EV range of up to 93 miles
- 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds
- Priced from £44,990
Chinese manufacturer Omoda has turned heads after revealing a new SUV that could boast the longest EV range for a plug-in hybrid in the UK.
The all-wheel drive Omoda 9 isn’t just long-legged, it’s also rapid - with 449 PS giving it the skills to accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 4.9 seconds.
It means the Omoda 9 would go toe-to-toe with a Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid in a drag race. Yet while the Porsche would set you back around £90,000 to buy outright, the Omoda 9 starts from £44,990.
It’s not hard to see, then, that the Omoda 9 could be a bit of a bargain - even if Omoda might not be a brand you’re too familiar with just yet.
So, let’s start with that powertrain - called the ‘Super Hybrid System’ (SHS).
A 1.5-litre petrol engine is mated to a 34.46 kWh battery and twin electric motors. They combine to produce 449 PS and 700 Nm of torque, giving the 9 ‘instant and effortless acceleration’. The Omoda 9 is actually quicker than a Honda Civic Type R!
The PHEV set-up also offers self-charging capabilities (as some other plug-in hybrids also do).
And the stated range figures should make you sit up and take notice. Omoda says the 9 is capable of journeying up to 93 miles using EV power alone (based on the standard Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure, or ‘WLTP’).
If the 93-mile figure is correct, the Omoda 9 jumps straight to the top of the list for UK plug-in hybrids with the longest EV range - with rivals like the VW Golf eHybrid offering an EV range of up to 92 miles and the Audi A3 TFSIe weighing-in with 88 miles.
Omoda reckons the 9 will be adept off-road, too, and there are various drive modes (Mud, Snow and Off-Road) to cope with the tough stuff.
While beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, Omoda has also designed the 9 using the famous ‘golden ratio’ - a formula for making something easy on the eye that dates all the way back to Leonardo da Vinci.
It’s a handsome beast, with a diamond-effect front grille, wrap-around lighting, and a sleek sloping roofline.
There’s one fully-loaded trim level (for now) in an ‘everything as standard’ approach from Omoda.
You can expect fancy electromagnetic suspension, a 1.3-metre sunroof, quilted seats that are heated and ventilated in the front and which recline in the back, and a 14-speaker Sony system.
A curved 24.6-inch high-definition display combines driver and infotainment functions.
Victor Zhang, UK Country Director Omoda, said: “The Omoda 9 is an important step forward for us, and it is representative of what modern living should be – beautifully designed, intelligently engineered and with technology that is actually usable. The difference is, this isn’t a house – it’s all found within a car!”
Size-wise, the Omoda 9 is similar in size to the Skoda Kodiaq, Hyundai Santa Fe or Kia Sorento. Unlike those rivals, however, the Omoda 9 is a five-seater.
The Omoda 9 will be available to lease imminently.
