Here’s your first look at the muscular new Nissan Qashqai, which arrives this summer with a snarling face inspired by ancient samurai warriors!
The Qashqai - built right here in the UK - sets the benchmark when it comes to SUV-hatchback crossovers and has been winning admirers since 2007.
And this latest facelift sees the school run fave getting a ‘heavily revised exterior’ that’s designed to ‘seduce crossover customers’.
One of the most striking elements of the Qashqai’s new look is that intricate front grille, which is ‘inspired by the patterns of ancient Japanese armour scales’ and features dozens of 3D comma-shaped elements painted in high gloss black paint.
There are ‘sharper’ looking new headlights at the front and a redesigned bumper at the rear.
Nissan has also introduced a brand-new trim level, called ‘N-Design’. At this grade lease customers can expect unique 20-inch alloys as well as body-coloured lower doors and wheel arches.
The cabin has been given a makeover, too, with cars higher up the trim levels gaining Alcantara material on the dashboard, door inserts, armrests, and centre storage console lid, while there are also more premium seats.
Tech levels on the Qashqai have also been given a boost.
The headline news is that Google services are now built into the infotainment system, so that you can access all of your favourite apps, including Google Maps.
The ‘Hey Google’ voice assistant can control lots of different functions, from the heated seats to the sat nav, while the ‘Nissan Connected Services’ system can send a message to your phone if you’ve left the car unlocked or forgotten to wind up the windows.
There’s also a new surround-view camera offering better clarity, a GPS-assisted self-parking system, and upgraded driver assistance and safety systems. The Autonomous Emergency Braking function is now quicker to react, says Nissan, while the Lane Departure Warning and Lane Departure Prevention systems are automatically activated at the start of every journey.
When it comes to the Qashqai’s engines, you’re basically looking at the same choices as before.
A 1.3-litre petrol mild-hybrid offers power of up to 158 PS and can also be married to all-wheel drive transmission.
Meanwhile the ‘e-POWER’ Qashqai is a quirky hybrid that uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine to feed power to a battery and electric motor - which drives the wheels - to give you the feel of driving a fully-electric vehicle without the associated range anxiety.
A Nissan spokesperson adds: “From the bold changes to the exterior styling to the comprehensive updates to the infotainment and connected services on-board, the philosophy behind the changes to Qashqai is to keep the essence of what consumers love about Qashqai, enhance its strengths and to add even more intuitive and convenient technology.”
