Give a big welcome to the newest member of Volkswagen’s ever-growing ‘ID’ family - the brand new, all-electric ID.5.
There’s something of a vogue for coupe-styled SUVs right now. You only need to look at cars like the Volvo XC40 Recharge, the Renault Arkana and VW’s own Taigo to spot what’s happening.
And now the freshly-revealed ID.5 continues the trend.
It is, essentially, similar to the ID.4 SUV, yet comes with a distinctive sloping roofline and more sporty styling. And there’s also performance to match the looks - as lease customers will also get to enjoy the dual-motor, all-wheel drive ID.5 GTX hot-SUV. That variant boasts power of 300 PS and yet will still have a range of 308 miles between charges.
Ralf Brandstätter, brand CEO at VW, says:
“The ID.5 is electric, sporty and elegant. Our premium SUV coupé with all-electric drive marks another milestone in our ACCELERATE strategy. It offers locally carbon-neutral driving enjoyment for a discerning customer group. We are breaking into a completely new market segment with this model.”
There’s no official word yet as to what will drive the regular ID.5, but early indications suggest it will share the same powertrains as the ID.4. That means a rear-wheel drive model with power of 173 PS and a range of 323 miles before it needs a recharge. You can also expect a 203 PS variant with a decent 0-62mph sprint time of 8.4 seconds and a more than adequate range.
Meanwhile VW has already revealed that the GTX model will get a 77 kWh battery and an electric motor on each wheel, giving superior traction as well as grunt. Crucially, VW sees the GTX as continuing the success of its GTI, GTD and GTE models, which will be music to the ears of VW die-hards.
As you might have expected, the ID.5 will feature next-generation software with over-the-air update capabilities, as well as the remote activation of additional functions.
Innovative driver assistance systems, such as ‘Travel Assist with swarm data’, will allow for an even more relaxed and predictive driving experience, according to VW.
You can have an augmented reality head-up display as an option should you wish, the infotainment system has AI learning capabilities, and the ‘swarm’ data mentioned earlier basically takes information from other VW’s in an 800 metre radius and tips drivers off about potential hazards, including stationary traffic.
Meanwhile the new optional Park Assist Plus pretty much parks your car for you at the touch of a button in an app.
VW says it’s incoming e-SUV coupe will launch in 2022. And because of a lower drag coefficient than the ID.4, it should prove more efficient than its sibling. Those better aerodynamics are partly down to an integrated spoiler as well as a specially shaped tailgate. Electric cooling air vents in the front of the vehicle open only when necessary, so as to ensure optimal air flow.
What’s more, 549 litres of luggage space should make the ID.5 practical, too.
A VW spokesperson adds:
“The new body style and lounge-like spatial concept highlight the innovative power of Volkswagen and its ID. family. Despite its coupé-type shape, the ID.5 has just 12 mm less headroom in the back than the Volkswagen ID.4. The long 2766 mm wheelbase facilitates interior spatial conditions comparable to those of SUVs in higher vehicle classes.”
We’ll bring you further updates on the ID.5 as and when they arrive.
