Nissan’s new and improved X-Trail SUV could be the ultimate jack of all trades.
Need a modern 7 seater with tons of luggage space and wide-opening rear doors to better slot-in the kids? Tick - the new X-Trail comes with either 5 or 7 seats, depending on which version you choose.
Crave a state-of-the-art hybrid powertrain that’ll cut down your fuel bill while also somehow feeling like you’re driving an electric vehicle? Boom - Nissan’s new ‘e-Power’ system uses a petrol engine to generate electricity, with the motors actually driving the wheels.
And do you demand bang up-to-date styling in a super-sharp package? The facelifted X-Trail looks every inch the modern SUV.
Nissan’s Francois Bailly, Senior Vice President, tells us:
“Replacing an icon like the X-Trail is a huge responsibility. It has established itself as a vehicle for families to share adventures in, so we know what our customers appreciate. For the fourth generation, we will give them the capacity for adventure, with an advanced electrified all-wheel drive powertrain, combined with intuitive and convenient technology.”
How does the refreshed X-Trail stack-up in the looks department?
A larger stablemate to the popular Qashqai, Nissan says the X-Trail is ‘modern, muscular’ but ‘without being aggressive’.
It gets the firm’s wide V-motion grille with an active shutter to improve air flow into the engine bay, as well as ‘taut’ lines at the rear.
There are two powertrains up for grabs.
There’s a 1.5 litre petrol mild hybrid that you can configure as either a 5 or 7 seater, as well as two-wheel-drive or all-wheel drive.
But it’s the ePower hybrid - which you can also enjoy with the Qashqai - that’ll win admirers.
It’s designed to offer an ‘EV-drive feeling without the need to recharge’ as well as an ‘instant, linear response to the accelerator’.
Like with the mild-hybrid mentioned above, the ePower X-Trail uses a 1.5 litre petrol engine that acts as a generator to feed a 150kW front electric motor.
You can expect power of up to 213 PS, when married to AWD, as well as around 45 miles to the gallon. Acceleration is brisk, too, taking just 7.0 seconds flat to reach 62mph from a standstill.
Like a regular EV, the ePower X-Trail also has an ‘e-Pedal Step’ system, which means you’ll experience braking the minute you lift your right foot from the accelerator pedal. That’s designed to take the stress out of stop-start city traffic.
The only downside is that the ePower X-Trail cannot be had as a seven seater.
Overall, suspension and steering on the X-Trail has been improved and uprated to make things ‘enjoyable when the road turns twisty’, says Nissan.
You can also expect a larger 12.3 inch infotainment touchscreen, as well as goodies such as a head-up display.
The all-New X-Trail is equipped with the next generation of ‘ProPILOT assist’ - a safety package that features adaptive cruise control, speed monitoring on curves, blind-spot radars and ‘Moving Object Detection’ alert, which will automatically apply the brakes to stop the car if a moving object is detected.
The new X-Trail starts at £32,030 to purchase outright and deliveries will begin in October. Watch this space for lease prices soon!
