Saab fans take note - a new electric car is on the way, built by the defunct Swedish firm’s successor.
And the NEVS Emily GT is a game changer in more ways than one, because it also has a claimed range of up to 621 miles between charges, which obliterates the competition.
Saab was, of course, an historic manufacturer from Sweden that produced vehicles like the 99 Turbo, a rallying icon, and the Saab 9-3 convertible (below), which was the go-to choice for anyone looking for a drop-top with seats for the entire family.
But trouble was afoot.
American giant General Motors acquired Saab in 2000 and the firm was ultimately declared bankrupt in December 2011.
National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) bought the Saab Automobile assets in 2012 in an attempt to keep the brand name going. Since that point, though, NEVS has struggled to get a proper foothold in the market.
Now, however, NEVS has revealed how its engineers and technicians - many of them old Saab pros - have been working on a secret prototype vehicle called the Emily GT.
And not only does it keep the Saab spirit alive, it’s packing some impressive stats.
NEVS Program Director Peter Dahl said via LinkedIn:
“Finally we can reveal one of all the secret projects that NEVS has been working on. I don't think anyone really thought it would be possible to go from a blank sheet of paper to driving cars in less than ten months. But with an amazing and dedicated team anything is possible, so we did it!”
The Emily GT is said to be equipped with a huge 175 kWh battery. For comparison purposes, the battery fitted in the most potent Porsche Taycan weighs in at 93.4 kWh.
Four electric motors result in a power output of 490 PS, which means it’s a car that’s built for comfort more than it is outright explosive pace, though it’ll be no slouch, either.
Meanwhile NEVS suggests it’ll be capable of travelling 621 miles between plug-ins - which eclipses the range of the 453 miles Mercedes-Benz EQS.
For the time being, the Emily GT is just a prototype. But there will be plenty of electric enthusiasts and Saab aficionados who’ll be hoping it becomes a reality.
