The world of electric hot hatches just got a MAJOR shock to the system, with the launch of the new MG4 EV XPOWER.
With power of 435 PS, a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 3.8 seconds, and a relatively low price tag of £36,495 to buy outright, you’re looking at Porsche performance for Nissan leasing money.
The dual-motor, all-wheel drive XPOWER is, of course, a souped-up version of the regular MG4 EV, with the standard car coming with power of up to 203 PS.
The XPOWER properly ups the ante. In fact, it’s the most powerful production MG ever.
With 600 Nm of torque, the bigwigs at MG say the MG4 EV X POWER will challenge the most potent high-performance hatchbacks on the market. And they’re not wrong.
Just take a look at one of the closest challengers, the Cupra Born. Entry level models start at £36,475 - which is pretty much par with the XPOWER - yet come with power of 204 PS and take 7.3 seconds to reach 62 mph. Even the most powerful 230 PS Borns take 7.0 seconds to get up to 62 mph. So, it’s clear to see the XPOWER will leave the Born for dead in a budget EV drag race.
So what else is the XPOWER competing with? The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N launches later this year, and will have power of close to 600 PS, and we might also see a production version of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E concept car.
But with a sprint speed that’s quicker than the Porsche Taycan 4S - a £90,000 car, don’t forget - the MG4 EV XPOWER is almost in a league of its own.
When it comes to how else the XPOWER differs from the regular MG4 EV, MG says the style tweaks are ‘understated’ and designed to let the new model ‘fly under the radar in comparison to the usual high-powered hatchback offerings.’
So it’s an electric ‘sleeper’, then, which is brilliant!
The XPOWER uses the same 62 kWh battery as the Long Range MG4 model, but the range between charges dips from 281 miles to 239 miles with the hot hatch.
There are major upgrades to the suspension and brakes, with recalibrated springs, stiffer anti-roll bars, sharper steering, and larger ventilated 345mm discs on all four corners.
You also get 18 inch alloys, a two-tone black roof, and a new ‘Racing Green’ colour option.
Guy Pigounakis, Commercial Director at MG Motor UK, says: “We’re confident the MG4 XPOWER will shake-up the market like the MG4 SE and Trophy, showing that a compact EV can be affordable, practical and a terrific drive.”
The MG4 EV XPOWER will be available to order in a matter of weeks, so watch this space.
And the fun doesn’t stop there with MG.
The firm is also planning to unveil an outlandish concept car - dubbed the ‘EX4’ - at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The EX4 ‘boldly reimagines the Metro 6R4 rally legend of the 1980s’ (below), says MG, and also gets the MG4 XPOWER’s electric drivetrain.
