MG Motor UK is the ‘fastest growing car brand in the UK’, according to the latest sales stats.
The British-Chinese firm sold 38,300 cars in the first nine months of 2022, making it the 12th most popular manufacturer overall.
And the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) figures show MG’s market share has increased by 82%, year on year, with September 2022 sales marking a 61% increase over the previous September.
That makes it the most rapidly-growing producer in Britain - and the remarkable success story shows now signs of slowing.
Few would have thought that MG would see such an uptick, having been brought back from the dead in 2011 following receivership in 2005.
But the historic marque lives on - and is going great guns under China’s state-owned SAIC.
MG Motor UK’s Commercial Director, Guy Pigounakis, said:
“The latest SMMT figures are extremely positive, reflecting the incredible growth we’ve achieved within the last 12 months.”
One of MG’s big selling points is its affordable, yet award-winning, electric vehicles.
Just this week the ‘ZS EV’ compact, all-electric SUV was named ‘Best Family Electric Car’ at the Carbuyer Awards.
Richard Ingram, Editor at Carbuyer & DrivingElectric, said:
"If there's one thing missing in the new car market it's affordable, capable EVs. But MG has nailed it with the ZS; a practical, efficient and well-equipped electric car with room for the whole family."
The ‘Long Range’ version of the ZS EV unlocks a range of up to 273 miles between charges, and can also be charged to 80% in just over an hour using a 50kW public rapid charger. You can be sure to get the most out of every charge, by consulting our guide on picking your ideal electric car charger.
Meanwhile the other weapon in the MG armoury is the newly-released MG4 EV.
You can read our review of the MG4 EV here, where our seasoned road-tester reveals how it’s not just ‘one of the best models in its class’, it’s also surprisingly good fun on twisty roads, proving a real driver’s car.
In ‘Standard Range’ trim, the MG4 EV can get you up to 218 miles down the road before you need to stop and plug in.
Meanwhile the ‘Long Range’ variant gets a larger 64 kWh battery, which increases the range to 281 miles.
The MG4 EV is quick, too. And the good news here is that the bottom-rung version is actually the most rapid of all the models available, sprinting from 0-62mph in just 7.5 seconds. That’s only a fraction of a second slower than the Abarth 595 hot-hatch.
The other note-worthy car in the MG’s electric stable is the MG5 EV Long Range - a practical estate with a 578 litre boot, and a range of up to 250 miles.
