The affordable MG HS SUV was the UK’s best-selling car in January 2023, according to the latest industry figures.
The data comes from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), with 3,481 MG HS examples registered in the first month of the year.
For lots of lease customers, the HS’s triumph might come as something of a surprise, particularly as close rival the Nissan Qashqai was the best-selling - and most-leased car for us here at Select- in 2022.
But the MG brand is on an upward curve here in the UK, particularly because it’s a rejuvenated marque that’s on a mission to provide attractive vehicles to those on a budget.
And in the midst of a cost of living crisis, the approach is clearly paying dividends.
Guy Pigounakis, Commercial Director at MG Motor UK, said: “We’re thrilled to see two of our best-selling models featured in the overall UK top ten. The HS model has been hugely important in the growth of MG over the last few years, and we’re delighted it remains so popular with customers. The growth in the electric car market is also very encouraging and we expect the recently launched MG4 EV and MG5 EV models to carry us further forward into 2023.”
There’s a lot to love about the HS, which sits in the MG range ahead of the more compact MG ZS, which was, incidentally, the 8th best-selling car of January.
There are two main variants available to lease - a HS with a traditional 1.5 litre petrol engine, or a highly-desirable plug-in hybrid.
The regular petrol powertrain unlocks power of 164 PS and will return up to around 40 miles to the gallon.
The plug-in hybrid HS, however, has lots more power, at 262 PS, which means it’ll sprint from 0-62mph in just 7.1 seconds. And the PHEV HS is also capable of travelling up to 32 miles using electricity alone.
With the punchy petrol HS, standard-fit equipment includes the ‘MG Pilot’ driver safety and assistance system, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and intelligent speed limit assist. You also get a 10.1 inch touchscreen, sat nav, and a rear parking camera.
That’s a whole lot of kit for a car you can lease from around £289 per month*.
The plug-in hybrid HS, meanwhile, begins at £405 per month*, and standard equipment includes the MG Pilot pack as well as goodies like a 360 degree parking camera and heated seats.
