Maserati MC20 supercar not wild enough for you? You’ll want this instead, then, the raucous MCXtrema.
The MCXtreme is what happens when Maserati takes its svelte, curvaceous MC20 and turns it into a razor-sharp, track-only, race circuit weapon.
It’s not legal on the road - and even its Italian makers are calling it a ‘Beast’.
The regular MC20 coupe chucks out power of 630 hp from its 3.0 V6 ‘Nettuno’ engine while being able to accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 2.9 seconds.
The Maserati MCXtrema, on the other hand, manages to eke-out power of 730 hp from that same V6 while sporting an exterior that’s had every bit of F1-derived aerodynamics thrown at it.
Even the cockpit turns the dial up to 11.
While the common-or-garden MC20 has a cabin that provides ‘luxury with a purpose’, the MCXtrema does away with those continent-crossing comforts and instead adopts a fighter pilot style cockpit with a single seat.
Just 62 ‘non-road-homologated’ examples of the MCXtrema will be produced for customers who probably don’t shop in the ‘reduced’ aisle at Lidl - as there’s an asking price of £936,000. Oof.
Speaking after the MCXtrema was put through its paces on the Autodromo Varano de' Melegari track in Parma, Italy, Maserati’s Chief Test Driver Andrea Bertolini said: “With MCXtrema, we have raised the bar of development even further, working with the track in sight and always bearing in mind the needs of the Maserati customer, who remains the focus of our work and to whom this car is dedicated. The interior has been designed around the driver; we developed a cockpit as a cross between a fighter and a Formula 1 single-seater. MCXtrema is an evolution of the MC20 without type approval for the road: for the Trident’s super sports car par excellence, we had already worked obsessively on its handling and overall architecture, to achieve this ultimate, extreme, and exhilarating version. MCXtrema is a thrill to drive, unlike any other car”.
