Lotus is set to launch its own rapid electric vehicle chargers in the UK in a bid to ease ‘charging anxiety’.
The Lotus ‘electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions’ are aimed at businesses who want to install their own chargers at work places.
But Lotus has also hinted at a wider public roll-out, with chargers also earmarked for ‘motorway rest stops’.
So, it’s news that’ll make firms like Tesla sit up and take notice, with Tesla already having around 1,100 of its own ‘Superchargers’ in the UK.
The Lotus units promise super-quick charge speeds of up to 450 kW DC, while there’s also a ‘power cabinet’ capable of charging four vehicles at once.
Alan Wang, Vice-President of Lotus Technology and CEO at Lotus Flash Charge, said: “As more governments are increasing investment into electrification in their journey to net-zero, the demand for a reliable electric vehicle charging infrastructure has never been higher than before. Lotus has developed best-in-class fast charging solutions to deliver a quick and reliable charging experience to meet customer needs.”
While no precise time frames are being put on things, Lotus says its chargers will arrive in ‘the majority of European countries’ by the middle of 2024.
With the 450 kW charger, Lotus’ ballistic Eletre R electric SUV can take-on 88 miles worth of range in just 5 minutes.
Speaking about its liquid-cooled Power Cabinet, a Lotus spokesperson says that it’s ‘a modular power cabinet that is suited for spaces that require high energy in order to increase efficiency and minimise charging time, such as motorway rest stops’.
Lotus has form for launching chargers, having already deployed them in China.
Mike Johnstone, Chief Commercial Officer at Lotus Group, revealed: “Over the past six years, Lotus has been investing in the technology and infrastructure to accelerate the transition to electrification. We want to make it easier than ever to own an electric vehicle and with our latest offerings, Lotus is able to provide customers with the confidence to access easy, fast, and efficient charging.”
Lotus also aims to become a fully-electric ‘luxury technology brand’ by 2028.
