New 8 seat Land Rover Defender 130 promises ‘Adventure for All’

When you’ve absolutely got to take the entire family hurtling over a dormant volcano during the school half term, this new Land Rover Defender 130 should see you right.

Prior to this week’s launch, the Defender could be had in two main guises - the two-door ‘90’ and the four-door ‘110’.

But now there’s another option for a vehicle that scooped the ‘2021 World Car Design of the Year’ gong at the annual World Car Awards - a longer ‘130’ variant with three rows of seats and the promise of ‘adventure for all’.

The seats are arranged in a 2+3+3 with the second and third rows enjoying a slight ‘stadium rise’ for better visibility from the back. Land Rover says there’s room for eight fully-grown adults, too.

The only slight fly in the ointment here is that while the Defender 130 is available with Land Rover’s mild-hybrid powertrain, it doesn’t enjoy the frugal ‘P400se’ plug-in hybrid system that you’ll find with the smaller Defenders. Hopefully that’ll arrive in due course.

Still, with power of up to 400 PS and the option of an economical 3.0 litre diesel with bags of torque, lease customers won’t be disappointed for long.

Nick Collins, Executive Director, Vehicle Programmes, Land Rover, said:

“New Defender 130 brings a new dimension of capability to our most durable and rugged family of vehicles. Its spacious interior welcomes and transports up to eight people in supreme comfort, enabling unparalleled sophisticated adventuring opportunities for families, with unique design signatures to create a distinct New Defender experience.”

So what else do you actually get for your monthly lease fee?

There’s an exclusive colour option - ‘Sedona Red’ - which you won’t find elsewhere, while the interior also has unique ‘130’ flourishes, including the option of new materials in the cabin.

There’s a large 11.4 inch infotainment touchscreen, electronic air suspension as standard, and Land Rover’s patented Cabin Air Purification Plus system that stops you breathing-in any harmful nasties.

It’ll be available in HSE, X-Dynamic SE, X-Dynamic HSE and X specifications, as well as a ‘First Edition’, the latter of which comes in either Fuji White, Sedona Red, or Carpathian Grey.

The First Edition model, priced from £73,895, also boasts an abundance of kit, including Matrix LED lights, heated second and third row seats, four-zone climate control, an uprated surround sound system, and 20 inch alloys.

All models get a panoramic sunroof as standard.

And because it’s a Defender, you can also rest assured that it’s built to tackle the tough stuff.

A spokesperson for the British firm explains:

“Land Rover engineers have crafted a subtle boat tail-style uplift that also maximises the unparalleled all-terrain capability customers expect from Defender, providing a departure angle of 28.5 degrees.”

When it comes to engines, both the petrol and diesel units are supported by 48V mild-hybrid power. The most potent mill is the 400 PS petrol, which will sprint you from 0-62mph in just 6.3 seconds and comes with max torque of 550Nm.

Every Defender 130 is fitted with Land Rover’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) system and eight-speed ZF automatic transmission as standard.

Meanwhile lease customers also get 900mm of water-fording depth and you can rely on the air suspension system to deliver 430mm of articulation when the road ahead gets really wobbly.

Towing capacity for the Defender 130 is up to 3,000kg and you also get a generous payload of 800kg.
