You wait ages for a bonkers off-road supercar, and then two come along at once…
Last week it was the turn of the Porsche 911 Dakar, a rally-bred beast with power of 480 PS and which sits 50mm higher than the 911 Carrera.
Now the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato has muscled-in on the action, with the Italian firm proudly boasting that it’s the ‘first all-terrain super sports car with V10 engine and all-wheel drive’.
Like the Porsche 911 Dakar, the ground clearance on the Huracan Sterrato has been raised by 44mm compared with the Huracan EVO ‘to ensure greater suspension travel’ and the track widths have been boosted front and rear to make it more sure-footed.
The Sterrato also gets aluminium front underbody protection, reinforced sills, a rear diffuser, rear air intake, and sturdy-looking new wheel arches.
And Lamborghini hasn’t held back on the power available, even if the Huracan Sterrato is built for dirt roads rather than the racetrack.
The regular Lamborghini Hurcan EVO has power of 640 PS - and the Huracan Sterrato has only slightly less get-up-and-go at 610 PS.
That grunt comes courtesy of a 5.2-liter V10 engine that also supplies 560 Nm of torque and works in combination with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and electronically controlled all-wheel drive with rear mechanical self-locking differential.
How fast can the Huracan Sterrato rattle across ‘unpaved and sandy surfaces’?
Well, 0-62mph goes by in just 3.4 seconds - precisely the same as the 911 Dakar.
Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard, as are 19 inch alloys and bespoke Bridgestone tyres.
The cabin boasts unique ‘Alcantara Verde Sterrato’ upholstery and has all the bells and whistles carried over from the EVO. In addition, you also get a digital inclinometer with pitch and roll indicator, a compass, geographic coordinate indicator, and steering angle indicator.
Speaking at the annual Art Basel show in Miami, USA, Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman and CEO, said:
“True to our values as a visionary, bold and unconventional brand, with the Sterrato we are breaking new ground in driving sensations.
Presenting the car at Art Basel in Miami reflects how, just like an avant-garde work of art, the Sterrato represents a radical and original interpretation of the super sports car concept but, in terms of performance, the Sterrato belongs in the world’s most dynamic and exciting driving environments.”
Production of just 1499 units will begin in February next year, with the Huracan Sterrato expected to cost north of £200,000.
