This is the rugged KGM Torres - and it’s a new SUV to rival the Jeep Compass, Nissan X-Trail, and the Hyundai Tucson.
In case you didn’t already know, KGM is the new name for established Korean manufacturer SsangYong after it underwent a major rebrand earlier this year.
And while the Torres is, for now, powered by a traditional 1.5-litre petrol engine, a fully-electric Torres EVX will also make its debut in April 2024.
Taking its name from the awe-inspiring Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, the Torres sits between the smaller Korando and the larger seven-seat Rexton in KGM’s line-up.
It’s available to lease in two trim levels - the entry-level K30 and the high-spec K40. An all-wheel drive K40 Torres will arrive in the summer of this year.
The turbocharged 1.5-litre engine delivers power of 163 PS and 280 Nm of torque, and the Torres will accelerate from 0-62mph in 10.8 seconds.
It’s a good-looking vehicle from where we’re standing, coming with what KGM says is a ‘tough aesthetic’, while it’s well-specced, too.
The entry-level K30 variants feature leather seats, a heated steering wheel, a 12.3-inch audio screen, a rear-view camera, and 18-inch alloys.
The K40 Torres adds extras like a smart powered tailgate and larger 20-inch rims.
Meanwhile the KGM Torres should also offer decent practicality, coming with a huge 703-litre boot and plenty of space for rear passengers. The Torres also gets some extra, concealed luggage space beneath the load floor, just like you get with the Ford Puma.
The towing capacity of the Torres is 1.5 tonnes with a braked trailer and 750kg for an unbraked trailer.
KGM says the Torres also offers a ‘competitive approach and departure angles for safer, stress-free driving in more challenging or off-road situations’.
Driver assistance systems like lane departure warning, driver attention alert, and autonomous emergency braking are all standard fit, too.
Kevin Griffin, managing director of KGM UK, said; “Torres is the first to reinterpret our future design vision, which draws heavily on our unique heritage. Its launch marks an exciting, new era for design, performance, and product with all models moving forward adhering to this new approach. The SUV market is continually expanding and subdividing, and with Torres, we are filling the gap between semi-medium-sized SUVs such as Korando and large SUVs like Rexton. This move will create an additional segment in the market and open new opportunities for us as we continue to develop our product offering that adds value and originality.”
